Galaxy S20 USB-C Charging Port and Daughterboard Replacement

Replacing the USB-C charging port will also require replacing the entire daughterboard, as it is soldered to the port.

  • The repair may compromise your device's water resistance, depending on the quality of reapplying the adhesive.
  • Your Samsung Galaxy S20 will lose its IP rating after this repair.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Disconnect your phone from power.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the back cover's bottom edge for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or heat gun with caution to prevent overheating, which can damage the display and internal battery.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Do not apply excessive force with the opening pick.

  • Apply a suction cup to the phone's back, near the bottom center edge.
  • If the display is cracked, use clear packing tape or strong tape to help the suction cup adhere.
  • Alternatively, superglue the suction cup to the broken screen if necessary.

Risk of damage: do not apply excessive force with the pick.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap once it is created.

Tight tolerances may require multiple attempts:

  • Reheat with the iOpener and separate with the suction cup as needed.
  • If trouble persists, apply more heat to the edge and try again.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Never cut adhesive near phone's curved edges, risk damaging glass panel.

  • Slide a pick along bottom edge of phone to slice through adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in seam to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup near the center of the left edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the gap.
  • The tip must be under the glass's edge; curved edges may require multiple attempts.

Excessive force with the pick risks cracking the back cover glass.

  • Apply more heat if creating a gap is difficult.
  • You can also try applying high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Insert the pick further under the glass edge and tilt downwards.

  • Fully separate the back cover's adhesive.

Step 7

Be careful not to crack the glass when navigating around the volume and power button frame.

  • Slide a pick along the left edge of the phone to loosen the back cover's adhesive.
  • Position the pick near the top left corner under the glass, leaving it there to prevent resealing.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Do not exceed 2 minutes on the right edge of the back cover.

  • Apply a heated iOpener or use an alternative tool like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Avoid overheating the phone to prevent damage to the display and internal battery.

Step 9 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 9 image

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near the right edge center.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, tilting it downward as you insert to fully seat underneath the back cover.

Step 10

Step 10 image

  • Slide a pick along the right phone edge to separate back cover adhesive.
  • Leave the pick under the top right glass edge to prevent re-adhesion.
  • Other picks may fall free; set aside any that do, as this point won't reseal the bottom edge.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Apply iOpener to the top edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

The curved glass near the corners of the back cover is prone to cracking.

  • Slide a pick along the right edge, starting from the top right corner.
  • Continue slicing up the top edge until you reach the top left corner.
  • If slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 13 | Remove the back cover

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover by lifting it slowly and using opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive.

  • Verify all functions work properly by powering on your phone during reassembly.
  • Power down your phone completely before proceeding with further repairs.

  • Remove loose adhesive chunks using tweezers or your fingers; apply heat if necessary for separation.

If custom-cut adhesives are used, refer to the separate guide for application instructions.

When working with double-sided tape, consult the dedicated guide for proper installation procedures.

Step 14 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Step 14 image

Remove the motherboard bracket by using a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the five 4 mm-long screws holding it in place.

  • Gently remove each screw and set aside for later reinstallation.
  • Keep track of each screw to ensure they go back exactly where they were removed from.

Step 16 | Unclip the motherboard bracket

Step 16 image

Use blunt-nose tweezers to carefully lift and unclip the motherboard bracket from the plastic midframe.

Do not completely remove the bracket yet, as it is still attached to the wireless charging coil.
