Galaxy S20 Loudspeaker Replacement

This repair requires replacing both the loudspeaker and the lower midframe of the Samsung Galaxy S20 due to their integration. Be sure to obtain replacement adhesive for successful completion.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Ensure your phone is unplugged and powered off before starting.

  • Apply heat to the back cover's bottom edge for 2 minutes using an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun.
  • Beware of overheating, as the display and internal battery can be damaged.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Apply a suction cup as close to the center of the bottom edge as possible.

If your display is badly cracked, covering it with clear packing tape may help the suction cup adhere.

  • Use very strong tape instead of the suction cup if the first method fails.
  • As a last resort, apply superglue to secure the suction cup to the broken screen.

Pull on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • If necessary, reheat the edge with the iOpener and separate with the suction cup multiple times before succeeding.

Avoid applying excessive force with the pick to prevent cracking the back cover glass.

Step 3

Risk of damaging the glass panel if cutting near its curved edges.

  • Slide a pick back and forth along the bottom edge to cut the adhesive.
  • Avoid cutting near the phone's corners where the glass is curved.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Apply iOpener to left edge of back cover and heat for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Avoid applying excessive force, which may crack the back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup near the left edge's center and pull firmly to create space between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, aiming for the very tip of the curved glass edge.

Multiple attempts may be necessary due to tight tolerances.

  • If a gap is hard to create, reapply heat or try loosening adhesive with high-concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol.

Step 6

Underneath the glass's edge, position the pick then tilt it downward.

  • Continue inserting the pick until the adhesive on the back cover is fully separated.

Step 7

Slide the pick along the left edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Be cautious when sliding across the ridge surrounding the volume and power buttons, as cracking may occur due to the cutout in the glass.

Leave your pick under the left edge of the glass near the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Avoid overheating the device — display and internal battery can be damaged.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but keep an eye on temperature to avoid damage.

Step 9 | Separate the right edge adhesive

  • Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near the right center.
  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create space between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, tilting it downward for full insertion.
  • Be aware that a similar process is required as done previously at another edge.

Step 10

  • Slide a pick along the right edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick under the right edge of the glass near the top, preventing the adhesive from resealing.
  • If other picks release and fall free, set them aside as this will prevent the bottom edge from resealing later on.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Heat a iOpener and apply it to the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

The curved glass near the corners is prone to cracking.

  • Gradually slide a pick from the right edge around the top right corner.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge, separating adhesive all the way to the top left corner.

If difficulty is encountered, stop and reapply heat before proceeding.

Step 13 | Remove the back cover

Step 13 image

Slowly lift the back cover.

  • Use opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive.
  • Remove the back cover.

Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing it up.

Make sure your phone is completely powered down before proceeding.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive chunks with tweezers or your fingers.
  • If necessary, apply heat to aid separation.

For custom-cut adhesives, follow the provided guide.

For double-sided tape, refer to its specific reassembly instructions.

Step 14 | Unfasten the motherboard bracket

Step 14 image

Remove the motherboard bracket using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • Take out the five screws, each with a length of 4 mm.
  • Keep track of each screw and make sure to reinstall it in its original position.

Step 15 | Unclip the motherboard bracket

Step 15 image

Hold the motherboard bracket with a pair of tweezers.

  • Gently pull up and unclip the motherboard bracket from the plastic midframe.
  • Leave the bracket attached to the wireless charging coil.

Step 16 | Remove the wireless charging coil

Remove the wireless charging coil by gently peeling it away from the device.

  • The coil is connected via spring contacts; no connectors need to be disconnected.

During reassembly, refasten motherboard bracket screws first to align the coil, then press the coil firmly into place.

Step 17 | Disconnect the battery

Be cautious when disconnecting the battery connector with a spudger — risk of damaging nearby surface-mounted components.

  • Pry up and disconnect the battery connector using a spudger.

Step 18 | Unfasten the lower midframe

Step 18 image

Remove the five 4 mm screws securing the loudspeaker and lower midframe using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

Step 19 | Remove the loudspeaker

Insert the point of a spudger or a tweezers into the notch at the top left corner of the midframe.

Use caution when prying to avoid damaging the midframe.

  • Pry upwards to release the clips holding it in place.
  • Remove the loudspeaker and lower midframe.
