Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra USB-C Port and Daughterboard Replacement

This repair requires replacement adhesive for a successful outcome.

  • Target: Remove or replace the USB-C port and daughterboard in Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug and power off your phone.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the back cover's bottom edge for two minutes or use an alternative heat source (hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate).
  • Caution: Avoid overheating, as the display and internal battery are susceptible to damage.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply excessive force with caution — risk of cracking the back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup to the phone's back near the center bottom edge.
  • If cracked, apply clear packing tape for better adhesion or use strong tape instead.

Superglue may be necessary if other methods fail, but ensure it dries completely before proceeding.

  • Pull the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap when created.

Reheating may be required multiple times due to tight tolerances, so patience is necessary.

  • Apply more heat if a gap cannot be achieved initially or with repeated attempts.
  • Be gentle with the opening pick to avoid damaging the back cover glass.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Do not cut the adhesive near the phone's curved corners — risk of cracking the glass panel.

  • Slide a pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the seam after removal to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Avoid burns from excessive heat exposure.

  • Place the iOpener along the left edge of the back cover.
  • Heat the iOpener for two minutes to soften the adhesive.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Attach a suction cup to the left edge of the phone's back, near its center.

  • Apply strong, steady pressure to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, but only as far as necessary.

Due to tight tolerances, this may require multiple attempts.

  • If necessary, apply more heat or a few drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) to loosen the adhesive.
  • Proceed with caution: avoid applying excessive force with the pick to prevent cracking the back cover glass.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Under the glass's edge, position the pick. Tilt it downwards and push in further.

  • The goal is to fully break the back cover's adhesive.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert a pick at the top edge and gently slide it down towards the bottom edge of the phone.

Leave the pick in place under the left edge near the bottom to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert another pick under the center of the left edge of the back cover.

  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Be careful when sliding across the ridge in the frame surrounding the volume and power buttons, as it may cause cracking in the glass cutout.

Leave your pick under the left edge of the glass near the top of the device to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 9 | Heat the right edge

Step 9 image

Apply iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution: they can cause heat damage to the display and internal battery.

Step 10 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone as close to the right edge's center as possible.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the gap.
  • Tilt the opening pick downward to fully insert it underneath the back cover.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 2

Slide a pick toward the bottom edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Leaving your pick under the right edge of the glass near the bottom will prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Insert a pick under the center of the right edge of the back cover.

  • Slide the pick towards the top to separate the adhesive.
  • If the bottom picks release, set them aside as they won't reseat properly.

Step 13 | Heat the top edge

Step 13 image

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the top edge of the back cover for two minutes.

Step 14 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 14 image

Prevent damage by handling the curved glass near the corners with care.

  • Slide a pick from the right edge around the top right corner of the device.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge to separate the back cover adhesive.
  • If slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 15 | Remove the back cover

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover from your device.

  • Lift the back cover slowly to avoid damage.
  • Use opening picks to remove any remaining adhesive.

Avoid applying excessive force, which may cause damage or cracking.

During reassembly:

  • Power on your device and test all functions before sealing it up.
  • Remove any remaining adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.
  • If necessary, apply heat to assist in separating the adhesive.

For Samsung custom-cut adhesives, refer to their specific guide for reassembly instructions.

For double-sided tape, refer to its manufacturer's guide for proper removal and application procedures.

Step 16 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Use tweezers to gently remove the wireless charging coil.

  • Remove the wireless charging coil
  • During reassembly, reconnect the wireless charging coil connector, then press the coil firmly into place.

Step 18 | Unfasten the motherboard bracket

Step 18 image

Remove the motherboard bracket using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • Loosen the five 3.9 mm-long screws securing the bracket.
  • Maintain a record of each screw's location for reassembly purposes.

Use a spudger to pry up the battery connector and then fully disconnect it.

Step 21 | Unfasten the lower midframe

Step 21 image

Remove the loudspeaker by using a Phillips #00 screwdriver to loosen the five 3.9 mm-long screws that secure it to the lower midframe.

  • Locate and remove each of the five screws.

Step 22 | Remove the loudspeaker

Step 22 image

Locate the notch in the midframe's top left corner.

  • Insert a spudger point or tweezers tips into the notch and pry up carefully to release the clips holding it in place.
  • Once the midframe is loose, remove the loudspeaker and gently pull the lower midframe away.

Step 23 | Disconnect the daughterboard

Step 23 image

Thumbnail 3

Never apply pressure to the center of a press connector — risk of pin bending and permanent damage.

  • Pry up the main flex cable from the daughterboard using a spudger.
  • Disconnect the auxiliary flex cable in the same manner as the main flex cable.

For press connectors, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side.

Step 24 | Disconnect the main flex cables
