Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra USB-C Charging Port and Daughterboard Replacement

Note that replacing the USB-C charging port and daughterboard may compromise your Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra's water resistance, as reapplying the adhesive is crucial for maintaining the device's IP rating.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug your phone from power and turn it off.

  • Heat an iOpener for two minutes before applying it to the back cover's bottom edge.
  • Alternative methods include using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

However, be careful not to overheat your phone, as it can suffer heat damage to its display and internal battery.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply extreme care when handling the phone's fragile components.

  • Attach a suction cup to the back of the phone near its center, as close to the bottom edge as possible.
  • If the back cover is severely cracked, apply clear packing tape to create a surface for the suction cup or use strong adhesive tape instead.

Proceed with caution: supergluing the suction cup may be necessary if all else fails.

  • Pull on the suction cup firmly but steadily to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap, taking care not to apply excessive force that could crack the glass.

Reheating the iOpener may be necessary multiple times to achieve separation due to tight tolerances.

  • Apply additional heat and try again if creating a gap proves difficult.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Risk of damaging the glass panel if the adhesive is cut too close to the curved edges.

  • Slide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.
  • Avoid cutting near the phone's corners where the glass is curved.
  • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Use a iOpener on the left edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's left edge, near its center.

  • Pull on the suction cup firmly to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, ensuring only the tip is under the glass's edge.

Due to tight tolerances, creating the gap may take multiple attempts.

Apply more heat if needed, or try applying a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam for extra assistance.

Do not apply excessive force with the pick to avoid cracking the back cover glass.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the pick under the glass's edge.

Tilt the pick downward carefully to avoid scratching surfaces — risk of damage.

  • Continue to insert the pick further until the back cover's adhesive is fully separated.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2

Apply the pick to the bottom edge of the phone and gently pry the back cover away.

Ensure the pick remains under the left edge of the glass at all times to avoid resealing the adhesive.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert another pick under the center of the left edge of the back cover.

  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Be careful when sliding across the ridge surrounding the volume and power buttons, as this may cause cracking due to the cutout in the glass.

  • Leave the pick under the left edge of the glass near the top of the device to prevent resealing.

Step 9 | Heat the right edge

Step 9 image

Excessive heat can damage your phone's display and internal battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener or use an alternative heating source (hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate) to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Beware of overheating and take care not to damage your phone's components.

Step 10 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's right edge, close to its center.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, tilting it downward to fully insert underneath the back cover.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert a picking tool at the bottom edge and slide it towards the top, prying the back cover away from the phone.

Leave the pick in place under the right edge of the glass to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert a pick under the center of the right edge of the back cover.

  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • If the bottom edge releases, set the three picks aside – it won't reseal.

Step 13 | Heat the top edge

Step 13 image

Place a iOpener on the top edge of the back cover and apply heat for 2 minutes.

Step 14 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

The curved glass near the corners is prone to cracking; be gentle during this step.

  • Slide a pick from the right edge around the top right corner of the device.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge to separate the back cover adhesive completely.

If slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 15 | Remove the back cover

Step 15 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover by lifting it slowly and using opening picks to separate any remaining adhesive.

  • Before reassembling:
    • Power on your phone to test all functions before sealing the device.

    • Remove any adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.
  • If trouble occurs:
    • Apply heat to aid in separating the adhesive.

For Samsung custom-cut adhesives, refer to a separate guide for reassembly instructions.

For double-sided tape, follow a specific guide for reapplication procedures.

Step 16 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 2

Be cautious when disconnecting the wireless charging coil connector with a spudger, as the adjacent surface-mount components may shift.

  • Pry up and carefully remove the wireless charging coil connector using a spudger.
  • Take care not to dislodge nearby surface-mounted components.

Step 17 | Unfasten the loudspeaker

Step 17 image

Remove the five 3.9 mm screws secured with a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • Keep track of each screw for reassembly purposes.
  • Ensure each screw returns to its original location.

Step 18 | Disconnect the loudspeaker

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Use the tip of a spudger to pry the loudspeaker loose from its mounting.

  • Gently insert the spudger into the notch at the top left corner of the loudspeaker.
  • Pry upwards to release the clips holding it in place.

Step 19 | Remove the wireless charging coil

Step 19 image

  • Peel the wireless charging coil carefully away from the device using tweezers or your fingers.

  • Take care not to damage the coil — it will be reused during reassembly.

  • Remove and set aside the wireless charging coil.

Step 20 | Unfasten the motherboard bracket

Step 20 image

Remove the motherboard bracket using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • These screws have a length of 3.9 mm and there are five in total.
  • Place the screws aside in a safe place to avoid losing them.

Step 21 | Remove the motherboard bracket

Step 21 image

Bending or damaging the connector pins can cause permanent harm.

  • Use a spudger to carefully disconnect the primary and secondary interconnect cables from the daughterboard near the bottom of the device.
  • To reattach, align and press down on one side of the connector until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.

Step 24 | Disconnect the flex cables

Step 24 image
