Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Screen and Battery Assembly Replacement

If battery is swollen, take precautions before proceeding.

  • Ensure you have the correct screen and battery assembly part for your Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
  • Discharge battery completely to prevent thermal event in case of accidental damage during repair.

Note: Reapplying adhesive affects water resistance, potentially losing IP rating.

  • Minor discrepancies in images should not affect guide procedure.

Step 1 | Eject the SIM Tray

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 3

Risk of damage to SIM card or tray if incorrect insertion occurs.

  • Insert a SIM card eject tool, butterfly tool bit, or a straightened paperclip into the top hole on the SIM tray.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.

Incorrect insertion will not damage microphone or ingress gasket, but try again if unsuccessful.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM Tray

Step 2 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

  • The SIM card will fall out easily.

  • If replacing, ensure correct orientation to avoid damage.

  • Inspect the thin rubber gasket around the SIM tray for signs of damage or absence; replace if necessary to prevent water and dust ingress damaging internal components.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 3 image

Unplug your phone and power it off.

  • Heat an iOpener for two minutes and apply it to the back cover's bottom edge.
  • Alternative methods: Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the phone.

The display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage if overheated.

Step 4 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back, as close to the center of the bottom edge as possible.

  • If the back cover is cracked, apply clear packing tape for better adhesion or use strong tape instead.
  • Alternatively, superglue the suction cup directly onto the broken cover if necessary.

Pull on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.

  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.
  • If unsuccessful, reapply heat with the iOpener and try again, potentially repeating this process multiple times due to tight tolerances.

Do not apply excessive force with the pick, as it may crack the back cover glass.

Step 5 | Slice the adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Risk of damage if adhesive is cut too close to curved edges.

  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge, slicing through the adhesive.
  • Avoid cutting near corners where glass curves.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of adhesive.

Step 6 | Heat the left edge

Step 6 image

Apply heat from an iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 7 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 7 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's left edge, near its center.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force until a gap forms between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, aiming for the curved edge of the glass.

Due to tight tolerances, you may need multiple attempts. Excessive force can crack the glass.

  • If trouble persists, apply more heat and try again.
  • Alternatively, add a few drops of high-concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam to loosen the adhesive.

Avoid applying excessive force with the pick to prevent cracking the back cover glass.

Step 8

Step 8 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert the pick under the glass's edge, then tilt it downward and push in further.

  • Continue until the back cover's adhesive is fully separated.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Position the pick at the bottom edge of the phone, carefully prying the back cover away from the frame.

Ensure the pick remains under the left edge of the glass near the device's bottom to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 10

Step 10 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Careful not to crack the glass when navigating around the volume and power buttons.

  • Insert a pick under the center of the left edge of the back cover.
  • Slowly slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place near the top, under the left edge of the glass, to prevent resealing.

Step 11 | Heat the right edge

Step 11 image

Be cautious not to overheat the phone when using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate but ensure not to apply excessive heat that could damage the display or internal battery.

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 12 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup near the right edge's center.

  • Pull the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, tilting it downward for full insertion.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Slide the pick down towards the bottom edge of the phone.

  • Leave the pick under the right edge of the glass near the bottom to prevent resealing.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a pick under the right center edge of the back cover.

  • Slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the adhesive.
  • If the bottom picks release, set them aside – they won't reseal later.

Step 15 | Heat the top edge

Step 15 image

Place a heated iOpener on the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 16 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 16 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Be gentle when handling the curved glass edges near the corners of the back cover.

  • Start by sliding a pick from the right edge around the top right corner.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge to separate the adhesive completely.

If the slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before proceeding to avoid damaging the back cover.

Step 17 | Remove the back cover

Step 17 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Lift the back cover slowly.

Use opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive.

Remove the back cover.

  • During reassembly, power on your phone and test all functions before sealing it up.
  • Remove any adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.
  • If having trouble separating the adhesive, apply heat.

If using Samsung custom-cut adhesives, follow the provided guide for specific instructions.

For double-sided tape, refer to a dedicated guide for proper application and removal procedures.
