Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Motherboard Replacement

Replacing the motherboard requires the motherboard from a donor device with working components or purchasing a pre-made replacement part.

Step 1 | Eject the SIM Tray

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 3
  • Insert a SIM card eject tool, bobby pin or straightened paperclip into the top SIM tray hole, located next to the plastic antenna band.
  • If inserted incorrectly, it won't affect the microphone or ingress gasket.
  • Press firmly inwards to eject the tray.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM Tray

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the SIM card tray.

  • The SIM card will fall out easily.
  • To reinsert the SIM card, ensure it is in the correct orientation relative to the SIM tray.

If the thin rubber gasket around the SIM tray is damaged or missing, replace it or the entire SIM tray to protect internal components from water and dust damage.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 3 image

Unplug and power off your phone before starting.

  • Heat an iOpener for 2 minutes and apply it to the back cover's bottom edge.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the phone and damage the display or internal battery.

Step 4 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply strong, steady pressure with caution — risk of damaging back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup to the phone's back near the center of the bottom edge using clear packing tape if necessary for adhesion.
  • Pull firmly on the suction cup to create a gap between the back cover and frame.

Insert an opening pick into the gap, reheating as needed due to tight tolerances. This may take multiple attempts.

  • Apply more heat if necessary, then try again to separate the back cover from the frame.
  • Be careful not to apply excessive force with the pick or risk cracking the back cover glass.

Step 5 | Slice the adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Slide a pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.

Avoid cutting near the curved corners, as this may crack the glass panel.

  • Leave the pick in the seam after completion to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Heat the left edge

Step 6 image

Heat an iOpener and apply it to the left edge of the back cover for two minutes.

Step 7 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's left edge, near its center.

  • Pull on the suction cup firmly to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, ensuring only the tip is under the glass's edge.

Due to tight tolerances, this may require multiple attempts. Apply more heat if needed.

  • To aid in loosening adhesive, apply a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam.
  • Do not use excessive force with the pick, as this risks cracking the back cover glass.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the pick further under the glass's edge, then gently tilt it downward.

  • Fully separate the back cover's adhesive for easier removal.

Step 9

Step 9 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Slide the pick towards the bottom edge of the phone to release the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick under the left edge of the glass near the bottom, preventing the adhesive from resealing.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 2

Careful when sliding across the ridge in the frame surrounding the volume and power buttons - the cutout in the glass may crack easily.

  • Insert a pick under the center of the left edge of the back cover.
  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave your pick under the left edge of the glass near the top to prevent resealing.

Step 11 | Heat the right edge

Step 11 image

Heat the phone's right edge with a iOpener for two minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.
  • Be cautious not to overheat the phone and avoid damaging the display or internal battery.

Step 12 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply suction cup near right edge center.

  • Pull suction cup firmly to create gap between back cover and frame.
  • Insert opening pick into gap, tilting downward for full insertion underneath the back cover.

Step 13

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Position the pick at the bottom edge of the phone and gently slide it toward the center to release the back cover's adhesive.

  • Leave the pick in place under the right edge of the glass near the bottom, as this will prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 14

Step 14 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a pick under the right edge center of the back cover.

  • Slide the pick up towards the top to separate the adhesive.
  • If the three bottom picks release, set them aside and proceed with caution as this area won't reseal.

Step 15 | Heat the top edge

Step 15 image

Use a iOpener to heat the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 16 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 16 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Be gentle when handling the curved glass near the corners.

  • Slide the pick from the right edge around the top right corner.
  • Continue along the top edge to separate the back cover adhesive.

If slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing to avoid damaging your device.

Step 17 | Remove the back cover

Step 17 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover by lifting it slowly.

  • Use opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive.

Apply heat if removing adhesive is difficult and requires extra care.

During reassembly, power on your phone and test all functions before sealing the device.

Remove any loose adhesive chunks with tweezers or your fingers to avoid reattachment issues.

  • If using Samsung custom-cut adhesives, follow specific guidelines for reattachment.
  • If using double-sided tape, refer to the recommended reassembly instructions.

Step 18 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Step 18 image
