Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Battery Replacement

Do not attempt to remove a swollen battery, as it poses a significant safety risk.

  • Discharge your battery below 25% prior to disassembly for safety.
  • Use high concentration (90%) isopropyl alcohol to loosen the strong adhesive holding the battery in place.
  • Prepare replacement adhesive for reinstallation.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug and power off your phone before starting.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or heat gun at a safe distance from overheating the phone, keeping in mind that the display and internal battery are vulnerable to heat damage.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near its center, bottom edge.

  • If the back is badly cracked, use clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Alternatively, apply strong tape instead of the suction cup.
  • As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to the broken cover.

Pull on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created by the suction cup.
  • Reheat the iOpener, then try again if needed.

Avoid applying excessive force with the pick to prevent cracking the back cover glass.

If creating a gap is difficult, apply more heat and try again.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Risk of cracking the glass panel if you attempt to cut near the curved edges.

  • Slide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.
  • Leave your opening pick in the seam to prevent resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup near the center of the left edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, but only aim for the tip to clear the glass's edge due to its curvature.

Tight tolerances may require multiple attempts.

  • If needed, apply more heat and try again.
  • Alternatively, insert a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam to loosen the adhesive.

Do not apply excessive force with the pick or risk cracking the back cover glass.

Step 6

Take care when sliding across the ridge in the frame surrounding the volume and power buttons, as the cutout in the glass may make it more prone to cracking.

  • Insert a pick under the center of the left edge of the back cover.
  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Leave your pick in place under the left edge of the glass near the top of the device to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 9 | Heat the right edge

Step 9 image

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate – but be cautious not to overheat.
  • Avoid overheating, which can damage the display and internal battery.

Insert a pick under the center of the right edge of the back cover.

Gradually slide the pick upwards to separate the adhesive.

The bottom edge may release additional picks; set them aside if they do, as it won't reseal further.

Step 13 | Heat the top edge

Step 13 image

Heat a iOpener and apply it to the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 14 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 14 image
