Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra Back Cover Replacement

Note that removing the back cover may compromise the device's water resistance and IP rating.

  • Follow this guide to remove the back cover for replacement or internal access.

The integrity of your Galaxy S20 Ultra's water resistance depends on proper reapplication of the adhesive after repair.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug your phone from power source.

  • Power off your phone completely.

Avoid overheating the phone, especially the display and internal battery.

  • Apply heat to the back cover's bottom edge using an iOpener for two minutes.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near the bottom center.

  • If the back is badly cracked, wrap it in clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Pull the suction cup firmly to create a gap between the cover and frame.

Do not apply excessive force with an opening pick, risking cracked glass.

  • Insert the pick's point into the gap.
  • If needed, reheat the edge with the iOpener and try again.
  • Repetition may be required to achieve a good separation due to tight tolerances.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

Slide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.

  • Avoid cutting near phone corners where glass is curved, as this may crack the glass panel.
  • Leave your opening pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Do not apply excessive force with the pick, as it may crack the back cover glass.

  • Apply a suction cup to the phone's left edge, near the center.
  • Pull the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, ensuring only the tip is under the glass edge.

This may require multiple attempts due to tight tolerances. Apply more heat if needed.

  • Alternatively, apply a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam to loosen adhesive.

Step 6

Insert pick further into gap and tilt downwards.

Be cautious not to scratch surrounding areas.

Insert a pick into the gap between the back cover and the frame.

  • Slide the pick towards the bottom edge of the phone to break the adhesive seal.
  • Leave the pick in place, under the left edge of the glass near the bottom, to prevent resealing.

Step 8

Be cautious when sliding the pick across the ridge surrounding the volume and power buttons, as it may be prone to cracking.

  • Insert a second pick under the left edge of the back cover.
  • Gradually slide the pick towards the top of the device to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place near the top of the glass to prevent resealing.

Step 9 | Heat the right edge

Step 9 image

Be cautious when using external heat sources, as they can cause damage to the display and internal battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but keep an eye on the temperature to avoid overheating the phone.

Step 10 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Apply a suction cup to the right edge of the phone's back, near its center.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert the point of an opening pick into the gap, then tilt it downward to fully insert it underneath the back cover.

Step 11

Insert a pick under the right edge of the glass, near the bottom of the device.

  • Slide the pick towards the bottom edge to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing.

Step 12

Insert a second pick under the right center edge of the back cover.

  • Slowly slide the pick towards the top of the device to break the adhesive.
  • If the bottom edge releases the three picks, set them aside and do not reinsert later.

Step 13 | Heat the top edge

Step 13 image

Place the iOpener on the top edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 14 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 14 image

Be gentle when handling the curved glass near the corners to prevent cracking.

  • Slide a pick from the right edge around the top right corner of the device.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge to separate the back cover adhesive.
  • If slicing becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 15 | Remove the back cover

Step 15 image

Use opening picks to carefully slice any remaining adhesive from the back cover.

  • Lift the back cover slowly and remove it completely.

Do not seal your phone without testing all functions first, especially during reassembly.

  • Remove any large adhesive chunks with tweezers or your fingers. If needed, apply heat to aid separation.
  • If using Samsung custom-cut adhesives, refer to the provided guide for specific instructions.
  • If using double-sided tape, consult the relevant guide for proper removal and installation procedures.
