Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus USB-C Port and Daughterboard Replacement

This repair requires specialized tools and experience, voiding your warranty if improperly done.

  • Replace the damaged or faulty USB-C port with a new one.
  • Additionally, replace the associated daughterboard.
  • You will also need to use replacement adhesive for proper reassembly.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug your phone and power it off.

  • Apply an iOpener to the back cover's bottom edge for 2 minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat: the display and internal battery are prone to damage from excessive heat.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Do not apply excessive force with the opening pick.

  • Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone's bottom edge, as close to center as possible.
  • If the display is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.

Tight tolerances may require multiple attempts: apply heat and separate with suction cup.

  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap, if one forms.
  • If no gap is formed, reapply heat and try again.

As a last resort, superglue the suction cup to broken glass.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 3

Avoid cutting the adhesive near the curved corners, as this may damage the glass panel.

  • Slide a pick along the phone's bottom edge to carefully slice through the adhesive.
  • Remove your opening pick from the seam and leave it in the gap you have created to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Heat an iOpener and apply it to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup near the left edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, ensuring only the tip is underneath the glass's edge.

Due to tight tolerances, creating a gap may take multiple attempts or applying additional heat.

For assistance, try applying 2-3 drops of isopropyl alcohol (over 90% concentration) into the seam.

Avoid excessive force with the pick to prevent cracking the back cover glass.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the pick slightly under the glass's edge.

  • Tilt the pick downwards, increasing its angle to release the adhesion between the back cover and the frame.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Careful not to crack the glass when sliding across the ridge.

  • Slide a pick along the left edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.
  • Leave the pick under the left edge of the glass after separation, do not remove it.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Avoid overheating the phone, which can cause damage to the display and internal battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but keep an eye on temperature levels to avoid damage.

Step 9 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back, as close to the right edge center as possible.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick point into the gap.
  • Tilt the opening pick downward to fully insert it underneath the back cover.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Slide a pick along the right edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Leave the pick under the right edge of the glass near the top to prevent resealing.

  • If other picks are dislodged, set them aside as the bottom edge should not reseal from this point on.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

Be gentle when handling the curved glass near the back cover corners to prevent cracking.

  • Slide a pick from the right edge around the top right corner of the device.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge, moving clockwise to the left edge.
  • Separate the back cover adhesive completely; if slicing becomes difficult, reapply heat and try again.

Step 13 | Remove the back cover

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover by slowly lifting it and using opening picks to separate any remaining adhesive.

  • Test your phone's functions by powering it on during reassembly.
  • Power down your phone completely before continuing work to avoid damage.

  • Remove any leftover adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.
  • If necessary, apply heat to help separate stubborn adhesives.
  • For custom-cut adhesives, follow the relevant guide for application instructions.

  • For double-sided tape, consult the dedicated guide for proper installation procedures.

Step 14 | Unfasten the motherboard bracket

Step 14 image

Remove the six motherboard bracket screws using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • Note the location and orientation of each screw for proper reinstallation.
  • Keep track of the removed screws to prevent mix-ups during reassembly.

Step 15 | Unclip the motherboard bracket

Step 15 image

Do not damage the wireless charging coil or remove the bracket yet.

  • Use a pair of tweezers to gently pull up and unclip the motherboard bracket from the plastic midframe.

The bracket is still attached to the wireless charging coil, so do not remove it yet.

Step 16

Gently tilt up the motherboard bracket to access the orange battery connector.

Step 17 | Disconnect the battery

Step 17 image

Be cautious when disconnecting battery connectors to avoid damaging nearby surface-mounted components.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery connector.
  • Avoid dislodging small surface-mounted components surrounding the socket.

Step 18 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 3

Use a pair of tweezers to gently remove the wireless charging coil from the device.

  • Remove the wireless charging coil completely.
  • During reassembly:
    • Reconnect the wireless charging coil and battery connectors.
    • Refasten the motherboard bracket screws to align everything.
    • Firmly press the coil pad down to secure it in place.

Step 20 | Unfasten the lower midframe

Step 20 image

Remove the five 4 mm screws using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • The screws secure the loudspeaker and lower midframe.

Step 21 | Remove the loudspeaker

Step 21 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Use a spudger or tweezers to pry the midframe loose, starting from the top left corner.

  • Be careful not to damage the midframe clips.

  • It may take some force to release the clips.
  • Once loose, remove the loudspeaker and separate it from the lower midframe.

Step 22 | Disconnect the daughterboard

Step 22 image

Thumbnail 3

Remove the main and auxiliary flex cables using a spudger near the device's bottom.

  • When re-attaching press connectors, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat on the other side; do not apply pressure in the middle.

Pressing a misaligned connector can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

Step 23 | Disconnect the main flex cables

Step 23 image

Remove both main and auxiliary flex cables by gently peeling them up.

Step 25 | Unfasten the daughterboard

Step 25 image

Remove the USB-C port using a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  • Three screws need to be removed.
  • The screws have a length of 3.4 mm.

Step 26 | Remove the daughterboard

Step 26 image
