Samsung Galaxy S20+ Back Cover Replacement

Your device's water resistance may be compromised and will likely lose its IP rating after this repair.

  • Follow this guide to remove and replace the back cover, or access the Galaxy S20+'s internals.

Reapplying adhesive correctly is crucial for retaining any water resistance remaining post-repair.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug your phone and power it off before starting.

  • Apply an iOpener to the back cover's bottom edge for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the device.
  • The display and internal battery are vulnerable to heat damage.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Step 2 image

Apply excessive force carefully, as cracking the back cover glass is possible.

  • Attach a suction cup to the phone's back near its center and bottom edge.
  • If display damage prevents suction, use clear packing tape or strong adhesive instead.

Super Glue may be necessary if all else fails.

  • Pull on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, avoiding excessive pressure that could crack the glass.

Tight tolerances may require multiple attempts at heating and separating.

  • If no gap forms, apply more heat to the edge and try again.

Step 3

Never attempt to cut adhesive near phone's curved corner — risk cracking glass panel.

  • Slide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the seam when finished to prevent resealing of adhesive.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Apply heat from a iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Step 5 image

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near the left edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap. The curved glass requires careful positioning: only the tip of the pick should be underneath the edge.

Tight tolerances may require multiple attempts. If you struggle to create a gap, apply more heat and try again.

  • Alternatively, add a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol into the seam to loosen the adhesive.

Do not apply excessive force with the pick, as this may crack the back cover glass.

Step 6

Insert the pick further under the glass's edge and gently tilt downwards.

Continue until the adhesive separates completely.

Step 7

Slide the pick along the left edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Be cautious when sliding across the ridge in the frame surrounding the volume and power buttons, as the cutout in the glass may increase the risk of cracking.

Leave the pick under the left edge of the glass to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Avoid overheating the phone, as it can cause damage to the display and internal battery.

  • Apply a heated iOpener or use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.

Step 9 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Step 9 image

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back, near the center of the right edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, tilting it downward to fully insert underneath the back cover.

Step 10

Slide a pick along the right edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

Leave the pick under the right edge of the glass near the top, or it may be dislodged and the adhesive will reseal.

  • If a pick is released, set it aside to prevent reattachment at the bottom edge.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

Be gentle when handling the curved glass near the back cover corners to avoid cracking.

  • Slide the pick from the right edge of the device around the top right corner.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge, moving all the way around to the left edge to separate the adhesive.
  • If the process becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 13 | Remove the back cover

Power off your phone before reassembly and test all functions.

  • Lift the back cover slowly and use opening picks to slice remaining adhesive.
  • Remove the back cover.

Do not proceed with reassembly until the phone has been powered down completely.

  • Use tweezers or your fingers to remove any adhesive chunks.
  • If necessary, apply heat to aid in separating the adhesive.
  • If using custom-cut adhesives, follow the provided guide.
  • If using double-sided tape, follow the corresponding guide.
