Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G Ultra Wide Camera Replacement

Replace the ultra wide camera in your Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G if it's malfunctioning or producing poor image quality.

  • Determine that the issue lies with the camera, not the rear lens cover. If necessary, follow the rear lens cover replacement guide first.
  • Remove the motherboard to access the ultra wide camera.

Note: You'll need replacement back cover adhesive for reassembly.

Step 1 | Before you begin

Let your battery drain to at least 25% before starting repair.

  • Power off your device.
  • Disconnect all cables from the device.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM card tray

Inserting the SIM eject tool into the microphone hole is unlikely to cause permanent damage, but be cautious.

  • Firmly press the SIM eject tool into the SIM card tray hole until the tray ejects.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from your phone.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge

Extreme heat may warp the back cover.

  • iOpener: Heat and apply to the bottom edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • (Alternative) Use a hair dryer, but be cautious not to warp the back cover.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup to the center of the back cover's bottom edge, as close to the edge as possible.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • This may require significant force. If necessary, reapply heat and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 5 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Slide an opening pick along the bottom edge of the device to cut the adhesive holding the back cover.

  • Leave the opening pick lodged in the bottom right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 6 | Heat the right edge

Use caution when applying heat - risk of warping the back cover.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer but be extremely careful not to apply excessive heat.

Step 7 | Slice the right adhesive

Slide the opening pick around the bottom right corner and all the way up the right edge to slice the adhesive.

The opening pick should be left in the top right corner for the next step.

Step 8 | Heat the top edge

Extreme heat may warp the back cover.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the top edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, but be cautious not to apply excessive heat.

Step 9 | Slice the top adhesive

Insert a pick into the top right corner of the device.

Slide the pick along the top edge, slicing through the adhesive.

Do not remove the pick from the device at this time.

Leave the pick inserted in the top left corner for further use.

Step 10 | Heat the left edge

Apply a iOpener to the left edge of the back cover and heat for 2 minutes.

Use with caution when employing alternative methods like a hair dryer, as excessive heat can distort the back cover.

Step 11 | Slice the left adhesive

Insert an opening pick into the top left corner, then slide it along the entire left edge of the device to cut any remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Remove the back cover

  • Remove the back cover.

  • If the back cover remains attached, use a tool like an opening pick to gently pry it away from the frame.

  • Continue sliding the pick around the perimeter until all remaining adhesive is separated.

Step 13 | Reassembly information

Power on your device and test all functions during reassembly before sealing it up.

Ensure power is completely down before continuing work.

  • If reinstalling old back cover, use tweezers or fingers to remove old adhesive from back cover and frame.
  • Use highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) and microfiber cloth to clean remaining adhesive residue.
  • Follow the guide for applying new custom-cut adhesive.

If installing new back cover, peel off liners and press firmly around perimeter to secure back cover to frame.

Step 14 | Unfasten the wireless charging assembly

Remove the wireless charging assembly in one piece, held together with graphite tape.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the 16 screws.
    • Nine 4 mm-long screws securing the motherboard cover.
    • Seven 4.5 mm-long screws securing the loudspeaker.

Step 15 | Unclip the motherboard cover

Insert a pick under the bottom right edge of the motherboard cover.

  • Twist the pick to release the clips securing the cover.
  • Insert and twist an opening pick on the bottom left edge of the cover to release the remaining clips.

During reassembly, press down firmly around the perimeter of the motherboard cover to engage the clips securely.

Step 16 | Reposition the motherboard cover

Slide the motherboard cover towards you to expose the connectors.

  • Reposition the battery connector.
  • Locate the wireless charging press connector on the bottom edge of the motherboard.

Step 17 | Disconnect the battery

Remove the battery and wireless charging connectors using a flat-edged tool like a spudger.

  • Pry up and carefully disconnect each press connector from the motherboard.
  • To reattach: Align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side. Avoid middle presses.

Misaligned connections can cause pin bending and permanent damage.

Step 18 | Unclip the loudspeaker

  • Insert a spudger between the loudspeaker and frame at the bottom left corner.
  • Pry up to release the left edge clips.
  • Pry up the bottom right corner to release remaining clips.
  • During reassembly, press down firmly around the perimeter of the loudspeaker to engage the clips.

Step 19 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Disconnect and remove the wireless charging assembly.

Step 20 | Disconnect the motherboard cables

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently pry up the interconnect cable press connector from the motherboard.

Disconnect the camera press connectors with the flat end of a spudger.

Insert the tip of an angled tweezers under the head of the red antenna cable.

  • Lift the cable straight up to release it.
  • Repeat for the white antenna cable using the same process.

Disconnect the blue antenna cable from the bottom left corner of the motherboard.

  • During reassembly, ensure the antenna cables are properly seated in their channels on the phone's edges.
  • To reconnect antenna connectors:
    • Align the connector over its socket.
    • Press down with a spudger's flat end until the connector snaps into place.
    • It may take several attempts, as this process can be tricky.

Step 24 | Unfasten the motherboard

Remove the screw (4mm) with a Phillips screwdriver.

Ensure the SIM tray is removed.

  • Lift the motherboard's top edge using a spudger's flat end until you can grip it with your fingers.
  • Remove the motherboard.

Do not damage any cables during reassembly. Secure the motherboard by pressing down firmly in its recess.

Place the motherboard face down on a clean, soft cloth.

Step 27 | Remove the ultra wide camera

Careful handling is required when disconnecting the ultra wide camera to avoid ejection.

  • Disconnect the ultra wide camera using the flat end of a spudger.
  • Ultra wide camera must be fully disconnected before removal.
