Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G Motherboard Replacement

This guide is for replacing the motherboard on a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. Replacement back cover adhesive is required for reassembly.

Step 1 | Before you begin

Ensure the battery is drained to 25% or lower to prevent accidental puncture.

  • Power button: Press and hold to shut down the device.
  • Disconnect all cables.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM card tray

Careful not to insert the SIM eject tool into a microphone hole.

  • Firmly press a SIM eject tool or straightened paper clip into the SIM card tray hole until it ejects.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.
  • If accidentally inserted into a microphone hole, proceed with caution as no damage is likely to have occurred.

Step 3 | Heat the bottom edge

Extreme heat may warp the back cover; use with caution.

  • Apply an iOpener to the bottom edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer on low heat, but be extremely cautious not to damage the back cover.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup to the center of the back cover's bottom edge, as close to the edge as possible.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • This will require significant force; if you're having trouble, apply more heat and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 5 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Insert the opening pick at the bottom edge and slide it up to cut the adhesive.

  • Leave the opening pick in place, inserted into the bottom right corner.
  • This will prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 6 | Heat the right edge

Extreme heat may cause warping - use with caution.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, but avoid excessive heat to prevent damage.

Step 7 | Slice the right adhesive

  • Slide the opening pick from the bottom right corner up the entire right edge to cut the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick lodged in the top right corner for the next step.

Step 8 | Heat the top edge

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the back cover for two minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, but exercise caution to avoid warping the back cover.

Step 9 | Slice the top adhesive

  • Slide a pick around the top right corner and along the top edge to cut the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick lodged in the top left corner.

Step 10 | Heat the left edge

Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, but exercise caution to avoid warping the back cover.

Step 11 | Slice the left adhesive

Insert the opening pick into the top left corner.

  • Slide it along the left edge of the device, working it downwards.
  • Slice the remaining adhesive as you go.

Step 12 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

If still attached, use an opening pick to carefully pry the edges and separate any remaining adhesive.

Step 13 | Reassembly information

Power on your device and test all functions during reassembly.

Ensure it's powered down completely before continuing work.

  • If reinstalling old back cover: Peel off old adhesive using tweezers or fingers.
  • Use isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) and microfiber cloth to remove remaining adhesive residue.
  • Apply new custom-cut adhesive following this guide.
  • If installing new back cover: Peel off liners and press firmly around the perimeter.

Step 14 | Unfasten the wireless charging assembly

Identify the wireless charging assembly, which consists of the motherboard cover, wireless charging coil, and loudspeaker. They are secured together with graphite tape.

  • Remove the wireless charging assembly as a single unit.

Be careful not to damage the graphite tape.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the following screws:

  • Nine 4 mm-long Phillips screws securing the motherboard cover.
  • Seven 4.5 mm-long Phillips screws securing the loudspeaker.

Step 15 | Unclip the motherboard cover

Insert a pick under the bottom right edge of the motherboard cover.

  • Twist the pick to release the clips securing the cover.
  • Repeat on the bottom left edge: insert and twist another pick to release all remaining clips.

During reassembly, press down firmly around the perimeter of the motherboard cover to avoid damaging the clips.

Step 16 | Reposition the motherboard cover

Slide the motherboard cover to the right or left to expose the battery and wireless charging connectors.

Step 17 | Disconnect the battery

Do not press down in the middle of the connector.

  • Use a flat spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery and wireless charging press connectors from the motherboard.
  • To re-attach, align carefully and press one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side.

If misaligned, pins can bend causing permanent damage.

Step 18 | Unclip the loudspeaker

Insert the point of a spudger between the bottom left corner of the loudspeaker and the frame.

  • Pry up to release the clips securing the left edge of the loudspeaker.
  • Pry up the bottom right corner of the loudspeaker to release the remaining clips.

Press down firmly around the perimeter during reassembly to engage the clips securely.

Step 19 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Remove the wireless charging assembly.

Step 20 | Disconnect the motherboard cables

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently pry up the interconnect cable press connector from the motherboard.

Disconnect the three camera press connectors with the flat end of a spudger.

  • Insert one arm of the angled tweezers under the head of the red antenna cable.
  • Lift straight up gently to release the red antenna cable.
  • Repeat for the white antenna cable using the same process.

Repeat step 2 to disconnect the blue antenna cable from the bottom left corner of the motherboard.

During reassembly, ensure antenna cables are securely in their channels on the phone's edges.

  • To reconnect, align the connector over its socket and press down with a spudger.
  • The connector should snap into place; it may take a few attempts to successfully secure.

Step 24 | Unfasten the motherboard

Remove the motherboard screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

Double-check SIM tray removal.

  • Lift top edge with flat spudger end until graspable.
  • Remove the motherboard.

Cables must be cleared during reassembly to prevent damage.

Lay motherboard in its recess and press down to secure.

Flip the motherboard over and lay it on a clean, soft cloth to prevent damage.

Step 27 | Remove the ultra wide camera

Careful handling is required when disconnecting the ultra-wide camera, as it may eject unexpectedly.

  • Disconnect the ultra-wide camera using the flat end of a spudger.
  • Remove the camera.

Step 28 | Motherboard

The motherboard remains after disassembly.
