Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G Fingerprint Sensor Replacement

This repair guide is intended for replacing a malfunctioning fingerprint sensor in your Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. The sensor needs replacement if it's no longer functional or has stopped recognizing fingerprints.

Step 1 | Before you begin

Ensure the battery is discharged to at least 25% before proceeding.

  • Power off your phone.
  • Disconnect any connected cables or accessories.

Step 2 | Heat the bottom edge

Apply iOpener to the bottom edge of the back cover for 2 minutes or use a hair dryer.

Avoid excessive heat that may warp the back cover.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup to the center of the back cover's bottom edge, as close to the edge as possible.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • This may require significant force. If you're having trouble, apply more heat and try again.

Insert an opening pick in the gap.

Step 4 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom right corner, then slide it along the bottom edge to cut the adhesive.

Do not remove the opening pick — risk of resealed adhesive.

Step 5 | Heat the right edge

Do not apply excessive heat, which may cause warping.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • As an alternative, use a hair dryer — but exercise caution and avoid extreme heat.

Step 6 | Slice the right adhesive

Insert an opening pick at the bottom right corner.

  • Work the pick up the right edge, slicing through the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in place at the top right corner.

Step 7 | Heat the top edge

Apply a iOpener to the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Hair dryers may warp the back cover due to extreme heat; use with caution if necessary.

Step 8 | Slice the top adhesive

Slide the opening pick to the top right corner and along the top edge, carefully slicing the adhesive.

  • Leave the pick inserted in the top left corner.

Step 9 | Heat the left edge

Excessive heat may warp the back cover.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer with caution, as extreme heat can damage the back cover.

Step 10 | Slice the left adhesive

Insert the opening pick into the top left corner.

  • Slide it downwards along the entire left edge.
  • Continue until you've sliced through all the remaining adhesive.

Step 11 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

If it remains stuck, use an opening pick to carefully pry along the edges and loosen any remaining adhesive.

Step 12 | Reassembly information

Power on your device and test all functions during reassembly.

Make sure to power it down completely before continuing work.

  • If reinstalling old back cover, peel off adhesive from cover and frame using tweezers or fingers.
  • Use highly-concentrated isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) and microfiber cloth to remove remaining adhesive residue.
  • Apply new custom-cut adhesive following this guide.
  • If installing new back cover, peel off liners.
  • Press firmly around perimeter to secure cover to frame.

Step 13 | Unfasten the wireless charging assembly

Remove the wireless charging assembly as one unit, including the motherboard cover, wireless charging coil, and loudspeaker.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove 16 screws securing the assembly.
  • Remove nine 4 mm-long screws securing the motherboard cover.
  • Remove seven 4.5 mm-long screws securing the loudspeaker.

Step 14 | Unclip the motherboard cover

Insert a pick under the bottom right edge of the motherboard cover.

  • Twist the pick to release the clips securing the cover.
  • Insert and twist another pick on the bottom left edge of the cover to release the remaining clips.

During reassembly, press down firmly around the perimeter of the motherboard cover to engage the clips securely, avoiding damage from misaligned clips.

Step 15 | Reposition the motherboard cover

Slide the motherboard cover out of the way to expose the battery and wireless charging press connectors at the bottom edge.

Step 16 | Disconnect the battery

Risk of permanent damage if connector is misaligned.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the battery and wireless charging press connectors from the motherboard.
  • To reattach, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.

Step 17 | Unclip the loudspeaker

Insert a spudger between the loudspeaker and frame at the bottom left corner.

  • Pry up to release the clips on the left edge of the speaker.
  • Pry up the bottom right corner to release the remaining clips.

When reassembling, press down firmly around the loudspeaker's perimeter to engage the clips.

Step 18 | Remove the wireless charging assembly

Disconnect and remove the wireless charging assembly.

Step 19 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Insert the flat end of a spudger into the connector and gently pry it upwards.

  • The connector will release with a slight click, indicating disconnection.

Step 20 | Remove the fingerprint sensor

Locate the point where the fingerprint sensor meets the frame.

  • Insert a spudger between these two parts and pry the sensor up.

Be careful not to damage the lens during removal or installation.

Make sure all air bubbles are removed from custom adhesive before reassembly.

  • Reattach by firmly pushing the sensor into its recess.
  • If your new fingerprint sensor has pre-installed adhesive, peel off any protective liners.
