Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole in the SIM card tray.

Press firmly to eject the tray.

Step 2 | Remove the SIM/Micro SD tray

Step 2 image

Remove the tray by pulling it straight out.

Step 3 | Heat the back cover

Step 3 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals; ensure replacement adhesive is ready, or carefully avoid liquid exposure during reassembly.

Turn off your phone completely before starting this repair.

  • Prepare an iOpener and heat the back of the phone along the right edge for about two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • You may need to reheat and reapply the iOpener multiple times; follow instructions to avoid overheating.

If using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, be cautious not to overheat the phone: the OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

Step 4 | Prepare to slice the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2

Be cautious when cutting through the adhesive.

  • Cut along the highlighted areas as seen from the outside of the phone.
  • The adhesive is thinnest on the right side, just below the Bixby button.
  • Refer to the first image for an example of the adhesive layout after removal.

Step 5 | Secure a suction cup

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2

Avoid placing the suction cup on the curved portion of the glass for a good seal.

  • Secure a suction cup near the heated edge, just under the Bixby button, where the adhesive is thinnest.
  • Apply strong tape or use superglue to secure the suction cup if the phone's back cover is cracked and won't stick.

Step 6 | Create an opening gap

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Support the heated phone on a 0.5 inch (13 mm) thick surface.

  • Lift the right edge of the back cover using a suction cup, creating a small gap between it and the frame.
  • If necessary, apply more heat to soften the adhesive; be cautious as the adhesive cools quickly.

Avoid overheating the iOpener or gel pack to prevent bursting.

  • Insert the edge of an opening tool into the gap carefully.
  • Avoid using excessive force, which may cause rear glass breakage.

Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick near the top right corner of the phone.

  • Slide the pick around the corner and across the top edge of the phone.
  • For this area, insert the pick farther into the phone due to a larger glued section.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from re-adhering.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Apply heat to the iOpener and place it on the left edge of the phone for 2 minutes.

Step 12

Be cautious not to damage any components.

  • Insert an opening pick near a bottom corner of the phone.
  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge, working to separate the adhesive.

The glued area is larger here. Insert your pick farther into the phone for full separation.

Stop prying if you meet resistance.

  • Use an opening pick to pry up the back cover carefully.
  • If resistance is encountered, use the opening pick to cut remaining adhesive.

Remove the back cover once loose.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Reinstall the back cover by ensuring your phone is powered on and functional after the repair.

  • If desired, remove large chunks of old adhesive that may interfere with a flush fit.
  • Apply heat to the back cover and secure it with pressure.

The phone will not be waterproof after this repair.
