Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or a straightened paperclip into the top edge hole next to the antenna band.

  • If inserted incorrectly, it will not damage the microphone or ingress seal.
  • Press firmly to eject the SIM tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Ensure correct orientation when reinserting the SIM card for proper functionality.

Step 2 | Heat the back cover

Unplug and power off your phone before starting.

  • Apply an iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternative methods include using a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate; however, be cautious not to overheat the phone as it may cause damage to the display and internal battery.
  • Refer to the image of the removed back cover to locate the adhesive areas while waiting.

Step 3 | Create an opening gap

Position the phone at an angle by resting its right edge on a surface approximately 0.5 inches (13 mm) thick.

  • Bend the left edge of the phone with your fingers, securing it in place to prevent sliding.
  • Pull the suction cup towards you with firm pressure.

Insert the edge of an opening tool into the gap between the back cover and the frame.

  • Gently slide the opening tool along the seam, loosening the back cover as it moves.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply an iOpener to the right edge for 2 minutes.

  • Suction Cup: Attach near center of right edge (where adhesive is narrow).
  • Pull on suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap.

Multiple attempts may be needed due to tight tolerances and strong adhesive.

  • Ensure iOpener has reached the 'barely too hot' temperature; try again if necessary.
  • (Optional): Apply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) to help loosen adhesive.

Avoid excessive force when using an opening pick, as it may crack the back cover glass.

Step 5 | Slice through the adhesive

Step 5 image

Never slice the corner adhesives without heating first – risk of cracking the back cover.

  • Slide an opening pick along the phone's edge, cutting through the adhesive.
  • Apply heat before targeting the corner adhesives to prevent damage.
  • Leave a pick in the seam to keep the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 6

Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the phone for two minutes.

  • Insert an opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner.
  • Slide the pick carefully around the corner and along the bottom edge, then around the bottom left corner.

If cutting feels difficult, re-apply heat to the edge before continuing.

Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent adhesive re-sealing.

Apply heat to the entire edge until it releases from the surrounding case.

  • Thoroughly heat any sharp corners before attempting a cut.

Twist an opening pick into one edge to separate the back cover from the frame.

  • Lift the back cover slowly using the opening pick.
  • Slice any remaining adhesive with the opening pick and remove the back cover.

Power on your phone, test all functions, and turn it off before sealing the back cover in place.

  • Follow the guide to reinstall the back cover, transfer the camera bezel, and replace the adhesive.
  • If desired, remove large chunks of adhesive that prevent proper fitment, then heat the back cover and apply pressure for secure installation.

Step 9 | Remove the midframe

Remove the midframe by lifting it from the top corners.

  • If the top midframe sticks to the lower one, peel it off slowly from its bottom right corner.
  • To reinstall: Align the midframe's top edge with the phone and lay it down.
  • Apply gentle pressure along the midframe perimeter using fingers to snap clips back into place.

Step 12 | Disconnect the battery

Insert the flat end of a spudger underneath the battery connector, attached below the rear-facing camera.

Be careful not to dislodge small surface-mounted components surrounding the socket when disconnecting connectors like these.

  • Pry upwards with the spudger to disconnect the battery connector from its socket.
  • Push the battery's flex cable gently away from the motherboard socket to prevent accidental contact.

Step 13 | Remove the loudspeaker

Step 13 image
  • Remove the seven 4 mm Phillips screws holding the lower midframe in place.

Grasp the motherboard by the top corners with your fingers.

  • Swing the motherboard slightly out of its recess, being careful not to snag cables along the way.
  • Pull the motherboard towards the top edge while wiggling it, loosening the charging port from its socket.

Once free, remove the motherboard completely.

  • To reinstall: align the motherboard's charging port with the bottom phone edge.
  • Push gently against the bottom edge until the charging port is seated.
  • Lower and press the motherboard into place carefully, avoiding trapped cables. The board should sit flush against the frame.
