Samsung Galaxy S10 Battery Replacement

For swollen batteries, take precautions and avoid heating your phone.

  • Use iFixit's adhesive remover or high concentration isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) to simplify battery removal.
  • Prepare replacement adhesive or Tesa tape for reassembling the back cover.
  • Discharge your battery below 25% before disassembly to minimize thermal risk.

Some steps show the lower midframe/loudspeaker assembly removed, but it is not required for this procedure.

Step 1 | Heat the back cover

Unplug and power off your phone before starting.

  • Apply a preheated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternative heat sources: use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat and damage the display or internal battery.
  • Refer to the removed back cover image to locate the adhesive areas.

Step 2 | Create an opening gap

Step 2 image

Position the phone at a 13mm angle using a support.

  • Suction cup: Pull with firm pressure while bracing the left edge of the phone.
  • Opening tool: Insert it into the seam between the back cover and frame.
  • Opening tool:
    • Slide it along the seam to loosen the back cover.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Step 3 image

Never apply excessive force with the opening pick.

  • Apply an iOpener to the edge of the phone for two minutes.
  • Attach a suction cup to the back, near the right edge's center (narrowest adhesive point).
  • Pull on the suction cup with steady force to create a gap between the cover and frame.

Multiple attempts may be necessary due to tight tolerances and strong adhesive.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created by the suction cup.
  • If struggling, reheat the edge until just slightly too hot to touch and try again.

Applying isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) can help loosen adhesive in tight spots.

Step 4 | Slice through the adhesive

Cracking the back cover can occur if the corner adhesives are sliced without heat.

  • Slide the opening pick along the phone's edge, cutting through the adhesive.
  • Heat is required before slicing corner adhesives to prevent damage.
  • Leave a pick in the seam to keep the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 5

Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom edge of the phone for 2 minutes.

  • Insert an opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner and carefully slide it around the corner.
  • Continue cutting along the bottom edge and around the bottom left corner, re-applying heat if necessary to aid the process.
  • If the adhesive starts to re-seal, ensure an opening pick is still in the seam.

Step 6

Continuously heat and slice along the remaining phone edges.

  • Apply extra heat to the corners before cutting.

Step 7

Insert an opening pick into one edge of the phone to begin separating the back cover.

  • Lift the back cover slowly using the pick.
  • Slice any remaining adhesive with additional picks.

Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing the back cover.

Power down your phone completely before proceeding with reassembly.

  • Follow this guide for reinstalling the back cover, camera bezel, and adhesive.

If desired, you can skip replacing the adhesive. Remove large chunks of adhesive that may interfere with a flush fit.

  • Apply heat and pressure to secure the back cover after installation.

Step 8 | Remove the midframe

Step 8 image

Remove the eight 4 mm Phillips screws that secure the top midframe.

Step 9

Be careful when prying the midframe as it may be damaged easily.

  • Locate the plastic clips along the edge of the midframe.
  • Insert a spudger into the notch near the volume up button on the right edge.
  • Pry upwards to loosen the midframe from the phone.

Step 10

Remove the midframe from the top corners of the phone.

  • If the top midframe is stuck to the lower midframe, slowly peel it off at the bottom right corner.
  • To reinstall, align the top edge of the midframe and lay it down on the phone.
  • Apply gentle pressure along the perimeter with fingers to snap the clips back into place.

Step 11 | Disconnect the battery

Step 11 image

Insert the flat end of a spudger under the battery connector attached to the motherboard below the rear-facing camera.

  • Pry upwards with the spudger to disconnect the connector from its socket.
  • Be careful not to dislodge surrounding small surface-mounted components when disconnecting connectors.
  • Push the battery's flex cable away gently to prevent accidental contact.

Step 12 | Battery

Step 12 image

Be cautious of adhesive around the battery — risk of damaging surrounding components.

  • Locate marked areas under the battery for reference:
    • Frame where the battery is secured with strong adhesive.
    • Display cutout area, be gentle to avoid damaging display components.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Avoid direct heat on the battery to prevent risk of fire.

  • Apply 1-2 drops of adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol (90% concentration or less) to each battery corner.
  • Wait 1 minute for the liquid to weaken the adhesive.

Excess liquid can seep into cutouts and damage surrounding components. Apply only a few drops at a time.

  • As an alternative, heat an iOpener and apply it to the right side of the front for 2 minutes or until the battery is warm to the touch.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert the corner of an opening card into the crevice between the battery and the bottom midframe.

Pry the battery out using firm, constant pressure.

  • If it does not budge, apply more adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol and repeat the process.
  • Alternately, try applying heat with an iOpener.

Do not use metal tools to pry the battery out — risk of damage or injury.

Never reuse removed batteries — potential safety hazard.

  • Remove the old battery.
  • Wait ten minutes for liquids to evaporate if isopropyl alcohol or adhesive remover was used.
  • Install a new battery and follow installation guide.
