Unplug and power off your phone.

  • iOpener: Apply to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • (Alternatives:) Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate. Be cautious not to overheat the phone - the display and internal battery may be damaged by excessive heat.

Take note of the adhesive location on the removed back cover image before proceeding.

Step 2 | Create an opening gap

  • Position phone at a slight angle on a thick surface (0.5 inches or 13 mm) with heated right edge down.
  • Bend left edge of phone into your fingers for stability against sliding.
    • Apply firm pressure to suction cup.
    • Gently pry the back cover loose along seam using an opening tool, working it back and forth.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Apply excessive force to the back cover and risk cracking the glass.

  • Heat an iOpener for two minutes on the same edge of the phone.
  • Attach a suction cup to the back, near the right edge's center (where the adhesive is thinnest).
  • Pull the suction cup with strong force until a gap forms between the cover and frame.

Multiple attempts may be necessary due to tight tolerances and strong adhesive.

  • Check that the edge is heated sufficiently (just too hot to touch) before proceeding.
  • Apply a few drops of high concentration isopropyl alcohol into the seam if needed to loosen the adhesive.

Insert an opening pick into the gap, but avoid excessive force that could crack the back cover glass.

Step 4 | Slice through the adhesive

Attempting to slice adhesive at corners before heating can cause the back cover to crack.

  • Slide an opening pick along the phone's edge, slicing through adhesive.
  • Leave a pick in the seam to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 5

Apply a heated iOpener to the phone's bottom edge for two minutes.

opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner.
  • Slightly slide the pick around the corner and continue cutting along the bottom edge and around the bottom left corner.
  • If cutting feels difficult, re-apply heat to the edge before proceeding.
  • Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent adhesive re-sealing.

Twist an opening pick into one edge to separate the back cover.

  • Lift the back cover slowly and remove any remaining adhesive with opening picks.
  • Remove the back cover.

Power on your phone and test all functions, then power down completely before proceeding.

Reinstall the back cover by following the guide. If desired, you may skip replacing the adhesive and remove large chunks that prevent proper fit.

  • Heat the back cover and apply pressure to secure it in place.
