Samsung Galaxy S10+ Rear-Facing Camera Module Replacement

This repair involves replacing the rear-facing camera module, which includes all three cameras and the supporting frame. Removing the motherboard is also necessary, with the main challenge being detachment of the glass back cover.

Step 1 | SIM/MicroSD Card

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or a straightened paperclip into the hole on the SIM tray, located at the top edge of the phone next to the plastic antenna band.

  • If you inserted the tool into the other hole, it will not cause damage as the microphone and ingress gasket are safely out of harm's way.
  • Press firmly to eject the tray.

Remove the SIM card tray.

When reinserting the SIM card, ensure that it is properly oriented relative to the tray to avoid damage or improper connection.

Step 2 | Heat the back cover

Step 2 image

Unplug and power off your phone.

  • Apply an iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the device, as this can damage the display and internal battery.

Take note of adhesive placement before proceeding, referencing the image of the removed back cover for guidance.

Step 3 | Create an opening gap

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply excessive force with the pick and you may crack the back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup to the phone's back, near the center of the right edge (where the adhesive is narrow).
  • Pull the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap. This may take multiple attempts due to tight tolerances.
  • If struggling, apply more heat and try again, or use high-concentration isopropyl alcohol (over 90%) for added lubrication.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Place the phone at an angle by resting the heated right edge on something 0.5 inches (13 mm) thick.

  • Finger brace the left edge to prevent the phone from sliding.
  • Pull the suction cup with firm pressure.
  • Insert an opening tool into the seam between the back cover and frame.
  • Slide the tool back and forth a few times along the seam.

Step 5 | Slice through the adhesive

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick along the edge of the phone and carefully slice through the adhesive.

Do not attempt to cut the corner adhesives before applying heat, as this may damage the back cover.

  • Apply a separate pick to the seam and leave it in place to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the phone for 2 minutes.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Insert an opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner.

  • Carefully slide the pick around the corner and continue cutting along the bottom edge.
  • Round the bottom left corner using the same technique.

If cutting feels difficult, re-apply heat to the edge before continuing.

Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent adhesive re-sealing.

Step 8

  • Continue heating the remaining edges of the phone with a heat source.
  • Thoroughly heat each corner before cutting to avoid damage.

Step 9

Twist an opening pick into one edge of the phone to separate the back cover from the frame.

  • Lift the back cover slowly, using opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive.
  • Remove the back cover completely.

Power your phone on and test functions before resealing the back cover. Ensure your phone is fully powered down before continuing work.

  • Follow the guide to reinstall the back cover, transfer and install the camera bezel, and replace the adhesive.

Step 10 | Remove the midframe

Step 10 image
  • Remove the 9 4mm Phillips screws holding the top midframe in place.

Disconnect the top midframe by lifting from the top corners.

  • To reinstall: align the top edge of the midframe and lay it down on the phone.
  • Use fingers to apply pressure around the perimeter to snap clips back into place, ensuring edges sit flush with the phone's edge.

Step 14 | Disconnect the battery

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert the flat end of a spudger underneath the battery connector, attached to the motherboard below the rear-facing camera.

Pry upwards to disconnect the connector from its socket.

Be careful not to dislodge the small surface-mounted components surrounding the socket when disconnecting connectors like this.

  • Gently push the battery's flex cable away from the motherboard socket to prevent accidental contact.

Step 15 | Remove the loudspeaker

Step 15 image
  • Remove the seven 4 mm Phillips screws holding the lower midframe in place.

Grasp the loosened midframe end with your fingers and lift upwards slowly.

  • Wiggle the midframe slightly to help release the remaining edge clips.
  • The loudspeaker is built into the lower midframe.
  • Remove the lower midframe.

Be careful not to damage any components during removal.

  • To reinstall, align the midframe's bottom edge to the phone edge and press it into place.

Step 18 | Motherboard

Grasp the motherboard by the top corners with your fingers.

  • Lift the motherboard edge slightly out of its recess, being careful not to snag any cables.
  • Pull the motherboard towards the top edge while wiggling it, loosening the charging port from its socket.

Once the charging port is freed, remove the motherboard.

  • Reinstall by aligning the motherboard's charging port with the bottom edge of the phone.
  • Push the motherboard gently against the bottom edge until the charging port is seated.

Lower and press into place, taking care not to trap any cables underneath. The board should sit flush against the frame.

Step 23 | Rear-Facing Camera Module

Flip the motherboard over.

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to pry up the two camera connectors and disconnect them from their sockets on the motherboard.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Apply heat to the iOpener for a few minutes, then place it over the rear-facing camera module.

  • Lay the heated iOpener on top of the camera module for exactly one minute.
  • This will help loosen the adhesive holding the camera module to the motherboard.

Step 25

Step 25 image
