This repair involves replacing the rear-facing camera module, which includes all three cameras and the supporting frame. Removing the motherboard is also necessary, with the main challenge being detachment of the glass back cover.
Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or a straightened paperclip into the hole on the SIM tray, located at the top edge of the phone next to the plastic antenna band.
Remove the SIM card tray.
When reinserting the SIM card, ensure that it is properly oriented relative to the tray to avoid damage or improper connection.
Unplug and power off your phone.
Take note of adhesive placement before proceeding, referencing the image of the removed back cover for guidance.
Apply excessive force with the pick and you may crack the back cover glass.
Place the phone at an angle by resting the heated right edge on something 0.5 inches (13 mm) thick.
Insert an opening pick along the edge of the phone and carefully slice through the adhesive.
Do not attempt to cut the corner adhesives before applying heat, as this may damage the back cover.
Heat the iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the phone for 2 minutes.
Insert an opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner.
If cutting feels difficult, re-apply heat to the edge before continuing.
Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent adhesive re-sealing.
Twist an opening pick into one edge of the phone to separate the back cover from the frame.
Power your phone on and test functions before resealing the back cover. Ensure your phone is fully powered down before continuing work.
Locate the plastic clips holding the midframe in place.
Insert the point of a spudger into the notch on the left edge of the phone.
Disconnect the top midframe by lifting from the top corners.
Insert the flat end of a spudger underneath the battery connector, attached to the motherboard below the rear-facing camera.
Pry upwards to disconnect the connector from its socket.
Be careful not to dislodge the small surface-mounted components surrounding the socket when disconnecting connectors like this.
Midframe remains held by plastic clips along edge.
Grasp the loosened midframe end with your fingers and lift upwards slowly.
Be careful not to damage any components during removal.
Locate the display connector near the bottom right corner of the phone's motherboard.
Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully pry up the headphone jack connector from its motherboard socket.
Remove the motherboard from the phone using a Phillips head driver.
Insert the point of a spudger under the right edge of the motherboard, near the volume up button.
Grasp the motherboard by the top corners with your fingers.
Once the charging port is freed, remove the motherboard.
Lower and press into place, taking care not to trap any cables underneath. The board should sit flush against the frame.
Flip the motherboard over.
Apply heat to the iOpener for a few minutes, then place it over the rear-facing camera module.
Position the spudger at the top-left corner of the camera module and gently pry it upwards.
Be careful not to damage the camera module or surrounding components.
Once loose, lift the camera module away from the motherboard.
Insert the edge of an opening tool under the loosened corner of the camera module.
Disconnect the camera data cable from the mainboard.
