Step 1 | Heat the back cover

Power down your device before starting.

  • Apply an iOpener to the right edge of the phone's back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating, as this can cause damage to the display and internal battery.
  • While waiting, study the image of the removed back cover and note the location of the adhesive.

Step 2 | Create an opening gap

Excessive force on the pick may crack the back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup near the center of the right edge, close to where the adhesive is narrowest.
  • Pull with strong force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • If needed, apply more heat or try again after reapplying heat.
  • Use high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol to loosen adhesive if necessary.

Do not use excessive force when using the pick to avoid cracking the back cover glass.

Step 3

Place the phone at an angle on a 0.5 inch (13 mm) thick surface to position the opening tool.

  • Finger grip the left edge of the phone to prevent it from shifting.
  • Pull the suction cup firmly onto the device.
  • Insert the opening tool into the seam between the back cover and the frame.
  • Apply moderate pressure to avoid damaging the phone's casing.

Slide the opening tool along the seam in both directions several times.

Step 4 | Slice through the adhesive

Never apply force directly to the corner adhesives without heat — risk of cracking the case.

  • Slide an opening pick along the phone's edge, cutting through the adhesive.
  • Leave a pick in the seam to prevent re-adhesion.

Do not slice corner adhesives before applying heat — risk of damaging the case.

Step 5

Step 6

Insert an opening pick into the right edge near the bottom right corner.

  • Carefully slide the pick around the corner, then continue cutting along the bottom edge and around the bottom left corner.
  • If necessary, re-apply heat to the edge before continuing, as cutting may be difficult.

Leave an opening pick in the seam to prevent adhesive from re-sealing.

Continue to apply heat and slice along the remaining edges of the phone.

  • Heat all corners thoroughly before attempting to cut them.
  • Slice carefully around the entire edge, removing as much of the phone casing as possible.

Twist an opening pick into one edge of the sliced phone to separate the back cover from the frame.

  • Lift the back cover slowly, using opening picks to slice any remaining adhesive as needed.
  • Remove the back cover once it is fully separated.

Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing the back cover in place. Completely power down your phone before continuing work.

  • Follow this guide to reinstall the back cover, transfer and install the camera bezel, and replace the adhesive.

Lift the midframe from the top corners.

Careful not to damage any components beneath.

  • Remove it completely from the phone.

To reinstall:

  • Align the midframe's top edge with the phone.
  • Lay the frame down on the phone.
  • Use fingers to apply pressure along the perimeter, snapping clips back into place.
  • The edges should sit flush against the phone edge.

Step 13 | Disconnect the battery

Insert the flat end of a spudger under the battery connector on the motherboard below the rear-facing camera.

Be careful not to dislodge nearby surface-mounted components when disconnecting the connector from its socket.

  • Pry upwards with the spudger to disconnect the connector from its socket.
  • Gently push the battery's flex cable away from the motherboard socket to prevent accidental contact.

Step 14 | Front-Facing Camera Module

Risk of permanent damage to the motherboard — be careful with alignment.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the front-facing camera connector from its motherboard socket.
