Samsung Galaxy S II T989 Motherboard Replacement

Working with the motherboard requires extra caution due to its critical importance.

  • Ensure your work surface is stable and solid.
  • Touch the phone's frame frequently to discharge static electricity from your body.

Minor shocks can damage the motherboard, so be extremely careful when handling it.

Step 1 | Rear Cover

Locate the rear cover tab, marked with a red outline.

  • Gently pry the rear cover using your fingernail.

Step 2 | Media Card

Locate the media card within the red rectangle, a small black card.

  • Gently slide the card to the right using your fingers.
  • The card should no longer be in contact with the metal.

Step 3 | SIM Card

Locate the SIM card, a small white rectangle within the larger red rectangle.

  • Press down firmly on the SIM card.
  • Slide the SIM card to the left, until it is no longer in contact with the metal.

Step 4 | Battery

  • Turn off the phone.
  • To remove the battery, apply upward pressure to the bottom right edge.
  • Be cautious, as the battery may be loose and pose a risk of electrical shock if mishandled.

  • Once the battery starts to lift, use your hand to hold it in place for removal.

Step 5 | Inner Plate

Remove the screws using a Philips head precision screwdriver. The screws are 1/16 of an inch (1.6 mm) in length.

  • Place the removed screws on a magnetic mat or in a plastic bag to prevent loss.

Place device on grounded surface or use anti-static wrist band when removing inner plate.

  • Remove screws from inner plate.
  • Firmly pinch edge of inner plate and pull away from frame, as shown in picture.
  • If necessary, use spudger to pry and lift plate out.

Step 7 | Motherboard

Be extremely careful when handling the motherboard, as it contains many delicate components.

  • Undo the four tabs:
    • The three at the top indicated by red outlines can be done with a small flat-head screwdriver or your thumbnail.
    • The fourth tab is located at the bottom of the phone and must also be opened.

Careful handling is required when lifting the motherboard — risk of damage if dropped.

  • Apply gentle pressure to the edges of the motherboard and lift upwards.
  • If it does not lift, try wiggling it left and right to free the corners from the case screw areas.
