Samsung Galaxy Note9 Iris Scanner Replacement

Replace the iris scanner on your Samsung Galaxy Note9 with these steps:

Step 1 | Apply a heated iOpener

Step 1 image

Power off your device before proceeding.

  • Apply heat using a hairdryer, heatgun, or an iOpener to the right edge of the phone for approximately one minute.
  • The adhesive underneath should become softened during this time.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with the suction handle to create a gap between the back cover and the phone frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

If the glass is badly cracked, cover it in packing tape before applying the suction cup.

Use heat instead of excessive force if the adhesive won't budge; too much force could break the glass.

Step 3 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 3 image

Risk of damage to the ribbon cable — be careful cutting along the left edge.

  • Cut carefully around the fingerprint sensor on the left edge.
  • If the adhesive is stubborn, apply more heat rather than increasing force.

Step 4 | Slide the opening pick

Do not insert the pick more than halfway to prevent damage to internal components.

  • From the center, cut the adhesive up and down on the right side with an opening pick.

Step 5

Be careful near corners, as glass is fragile.

  • Apply more heat if the adhesive becomes stuck.
  • Leave an opening pick in the upper-right corner.
  • Use another pick to cut the adhesive around the bottom-right corner and leave it in place.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Apply heat to the left side of the rear panel using a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for 3 minutes.

Step 7

Careful handling around corners is necessary due to weak glass.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Cut adhesive along the left edge with another opening pick, avoiding halfway point near fingerprint sensor.

Opening picks may fall out as back cover separates; this is normal behavior.

Step 8

Apply gentle pressure with the opening pick to carefully cut the adhesive around the upper-left corner of the rear panel.

  • Use an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun as needed to apply additional heat while cutting the adhesive.
  • Cut the remaining adhesive along the top edge of the phone.

Remove the rear cover from the right side.

  • Tilt the rear cover up along the left edge, exposing the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable.

  • The fingerprint sensor cover may remain attached to the midframe.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Insert the tip of a spudger into the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable's socket.

  • Once loose, lift the ribbon cable up and out of its socket.

Step 11

Remove the back cover.

  • To re-install, use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive.
  • Clean with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.

Only partially clean the adhesion areas; larger pieces should be removed.

  • Turn on your phone to test it after repair.
  • Carefully apply new adhesive and press the back cover into place.

Step 12 | Remove the upper midframe

Step 12 image

  • Then adhere the wireless charging coil.
