Power down your device completely before attempting any repairs.

  • Use a hairdryer, heatgun, or an iOpener on the right edge of the back for about 1 minute to loosen the adhesive.

Apply suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with a suction handle to create gap between back cover and phone frame.
  • Insert opening pick into gap.

If glass is badly cracked, cover it in packing tape for suction cup adhesion.

Apply more heat if adhesive won't budge; excessive force may break the glass.

Step 3 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 3 image

Careful cutting is required when approaching the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to avoid damaging the internal ribbon cable.

  • Cut carefully around the left edge of the phone, taking note that there is less adhesive in this area than elsewhere.
  • Apply more heat if the adhesive becomes stubborn, rather than increasing force.

Step 4 | Slide the opening pick

Careful movement is required near the lower-right corner, as the glass may break easily.

  • Apply additional heat if the adhesive becomes stuck during removal.

Insert an opening pick into the upper-right corner of the phone.

  • Use another opening pick to carefully cut the adhesive around the lower-right corner of the device.
  • Leave this pick in place within the phone.

Apply heat to the left side of the rear panel for 3 minutes to loosen adhesives.

  • Use a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for this step.
  • Carefully position the heat source on the left side of the rear panel.
  • Heat for 3 minutes to soften adhesives.

Be careful when working near corners, as this is where the glass is most prone to cracking.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Using another opening pick, carefully cut the adhesive along the left edge of the rear panel.
  • Avoid inserting the pick more than halfway on the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to prevent damage to the internal ribbon cable.
  • If the back cover separates, it is acceptable for opening picks to fall out as you work.

Remove the back cover.

Do not reassemble without ensuring a clean adhesion area.

  • Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis.
  • Clean the areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.

Test phone function before proceeding.

  • Apply new adhesive to the back cover.
  • Align one edge of the glass with the phone's chassis, then press firmly into place.
