The SIM card may fall out of the tray easily.

Step 3 | Apply a heated iOpener

Step 3 image

Power off your phone before starting disassembly.

  • Apply heat using a hairdryer, heat gun, or an iOpener to the right edge of the back panel for approximately one minute to loosen the adhesive.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with the suction handle to create a gap between the back cover and the frame of the phone.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • If the glass is badly cracked, cover it in packing tape to create a surface for the suction cup to adhere to.

  • Apply more heat if the adhesive won't budge; avoid excessive force as it could break the glass.

Step 5 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 5 image

Apply even heating when dealing with stubborn adhesives — do not use excessive force.

  • Be cautious around the fingerprint sensor on the left edge to avoid damaging the ribbon cable.
  • There is extra adhesive at the top edge and camera bezel; be prepared for this during removal.

Step 6 | Slide the opening pick

Step 6 image

Begin at the center of the device and use an opening pick to carefully cut the adhesive along the right side.

  • Cut gently up from the center for optimal results.
  • Avoid inserting the pick more than halfway into the phone near components like the fingerprint sensor or cameras, as this may cause internal damage.

Step 7

Be extremely cautious near the weak glass area.

  • Apply more heat as needed if the adhesive becomes stuck.
  • Insert an opening pick at the upper-right corner.
  • Use another opening pick to cut the adhesive around the bottom-right corner, then leave it in place.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Apply heat to the left side of the rear panel using a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for 3 minutes.

Step 9

Careful handling is required around corners, as glass is most fragile there.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Use another opening pick to cut adhesive along the left edge of the rear panel.
  • Do not insert the pick more than halfway on the left edge near the fingerprint sensor, as it may damage the ribbon cable.
  • If opening picks fall out during separation, do not worry – this is normal behavior.

Step 10

Insert an iSclae into the upper-left corner of the rear panel.

  • Cut the adhesive using a gentle sawing motion with the inserted tool.
  • Repeat this process along the top edge of the phone, cutting any remaining adhesive.

Use an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun to apply extra heat as needed to aid in adhesive removal.

Remove the back cover.

  • To re-install, use tweezers to peel away remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis.
  • Clean adhesion areas with at least 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth before applying new adhesive.
  • No need to clear all adhesive residue, but remove any large pieces.

Test phone functionality before reapplying adhesive and resealing the phone.

  • Carefully apply new adhesive to the back cover.
  • Line up one edge of the glass against the phone chassis, then firmly press the glass into place.
