Remove the SIM card tray.

The SIM card may fall out freely.

Step 3 | Apply a heated iOpener

Step 3 image

Turn off your phone.

  • Apply heat using a hairdryer, heatgun, or iOpener to the right edge of the back for about one minute.
  • The adhesive will soften during this time.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with a suction handle to create a gap between the back cover and the frame of the phone.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

If the glass is badly cracked, cover it in packing tape to create a surface for the suction cup to adhere to.

If the adhesive won't budge, apply more heat – excessive force can break the glass.

Step 5 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 5 image

Avoid applying excessive force to stubborn adhesives.

  • Be cautious when cutting around the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to prevent damaging the internal ribbon cable.
  • Additional adhesive is found along the top edge and camera bezel, so apply extra heat as needed instead of increasing pressure.

Step 6 | Slide the opening pick

Step 6 image

Avoid inserting the opening pick more than halfway into the phone around the fingerprint sensor and cameras to prevent damage.

  • Begin at the center of the device and use the opening pick to cut the adhesive up along the right side.

Adhesive can be fragile; exercise caution near corners.

  • Insert a second opening pick at the top right corner for leverage.
  • Use another opening pick to cut adhesive around bottom right corner.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Apply gentle heat to the left side of the rear panel using a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for 3 minutes.

Step 9

Careful handling is required near corners, as glass is weakest there.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Cut adhesive along the left edge using another opening pick.
  • Avoid inserting more than halfway with the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to prevent damage to internal components.
  • Picks may fall out as separation occurs, this is normal.

Step 10

Apply the inserted opening pick to the upper-left corner of the rear panel and carefully cut the adhesive.

Heat may be necessary — use an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun as needed.

Cut the last of the adhesive along the top of the phone using the opening pick and additional heat if required.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Remove the back cover.

  • To re-install: use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis.
  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.

Do not completely remove adhesive residue, but clear larger pieces.

  • Turn on your phone and test the repair before proceeding.
  • Apply new adhesive to the back cover.
  • Carefully press the back cover into place, aligning one edge with the phone chassis.

Locate the wireless charging coil and gently peel it away from the battery, starting with the left side.

  • If the adhesive is particularly stubborn, use an opening pick to carefully cut it loose.

Do not apply excessive force, as this can damage components.

  • During reassembly, snap the midframe into place first before adhering the wireless charging coil.
