Samsung Galaxy Note9 Battery Replacement

For safety, discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone, reducing the risk of a thermal event if damaged during repair.

  • Check for swollen battery and take necessary precautions.
  • Replace the battery if it drains quickly, won't charge, or won't power on.

If installing a new battery, calibrate it after completion:

  • Charge to 100% and keep charging for at least two more hours.
  • Use the phone until it shuts off due to low battery.
  • Charge uninterrupted to 100%.

Step 1 | Apply a heated iOpener

Step 1 image

Power off the phone.

  • Apply heat to the right edge of the back using a hairdryer, heatgun, or an iOpener for approximately one minute.
  • The adhesive will soften allowing easier removal.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with the suction handle to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

If the glass is badly cracked, apply packing tape for better suction cup adhesion.

For stubborn adhesive, apply more heat, but avoid excessive force to prevent glass breakage.

Step 3 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 3 image

Apply extra care when cutting along the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to avoid damaging the ribbon cable.

  • Observe that more adhesive is present along the top edge and around the camera bezel.
  • If the adhesive becomes stubborn, apply additional heat instead of increasing force.

Step 4 | Slide the opening pick

Never insert the opening pick more than halfway into the phone near the fingerprint sensor or cameras to avoid damaging internal components.

  • From the center, cut the adhesive up and down the right side with an opening pick.

Step 5

Risk of damage to the glass panel when handling near its weak edge.

  • Apply additional heat as needed if the adhesive becomes stuck during removal.
  • Insert an opening pick into the upper-right corner and leave it in place.
  • Use another opening pick to carefully cut the adhesive around the bottom-right corner, then leave it in the phone.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Apply heat to the left side of the rear panel using a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for 3 minutes.

Step 7

Be cautious when approaching corners, as glass is most prone to breakage here.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Use another opening pick to carefully slice along the left edge of the rear panel.
  • Avoid inserting the opening pick more than halfway up the left edge near the fingerprint sensor to prevent damage to internal cables.

Opening picks may fall out as the back cover separates; this is expected and poses no risk to further damage.

  • Insert the opening pick and carefully cut adhesive around the upper-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Use an iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun to apply additional heat as needed along the top edge of the phone.

Be cautious not to apply excessive heat, which may damage the phone's components.

Step 9

Separate the right side of the rear cover.

  • Tilt the rear cover up along the left edge to expose the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable.
  • Do not pull out the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable yet.
  • The fingerprint sensor cover might stay attached to the midframe.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Step 10 image

Insert the spudger tip under the finger print sensor ribbon cable and gently lift it out of its socket.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Remove the back cover.

  • Reassemble the device by first removing any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis with tweezers.
  • Clean the areas where the adhesive was applied using high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth. Remove larger pieces of old adhesive, but do not scrub too deeply.

Test your repair by turning on your phone before proceeding with the reassembly steps.

  • Apply new adhesive to the back cover, then align one edge of the glass with the phone's chassis.
  • Firmly press the glass into place.

Step 12 | Remove the upper midframe

Remove the upper midframe using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Securely loosen and then completely remove the nine 4 mm screws.

Insert the tip of a spudger into the upper-left corner of the upper midframe.

  • The upper midframe may snap in or out of place.

Peel the wireless charging coil off the battery starting with the left side.

  • Use an opening pick to cut the adhesive if necessary, as it may be weak.
  • During reassembly, snap the midframe into place first.
  • Then adhere the wireless charging coil in its correct position.

Step 15 | Disconnect the battery

Excessive isopropyl alcohol can damage the display.

  • Apply 1-2 drops of high-concentration (90% or greater) isopropyl alcohol in the battery well along the bottom and upper-left corner.
  • Wait a couple of minutes for the alcohol to soften the adhesive under the battery.
  • Tilt the phone at various angles to help the alcohol flow under the battery.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Do not bend or reuse the battery.

  • Apply a suction cup directly above the center of the battery, avoiding the white sticker at the bottom.
  • Use firm force to lift the battery straight up, creating enough space for an opening pick.
  • Insert an opening pick under the battery's edge and twist to loosen the adhesive.

If the battery doesn't come out easily, reapply a small amount of alcohol and repeat step 3.

  • Once separated, carefully remove the battery.
  • If using isopropyl alcohol, wait ten minutes for it to evaporate before installing the new battery.
