Samsung Galaxy Note9 Back Cover Replacement

Replace the back cover on your Samsung Galaxy Note9 with these steps:

Step 1 | Apply a heated iOpener

Step 1 image

Power down your phone completely.

  • iSclack or heat source (hairdryer, heatgun) is required to loosen adhesive.
  • Apply iOpener or heat source to right edge of back for approximately 1 minute.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the back cover.

  • Lift with the suction handle to create a gap between the back cover and the phone's frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Optional: If the glass is badly cracked, cover it in packing tape for better adhesion.

Do not apply excessive force, as this may break the glass. Instead, try applying more heat if the adhesive won't budge.

Step 3 | Cut through the adhesive

Step 3 image

Risk of damage to internal components if not handled carefully.

  • Apply even heat when dealing with stubborn adhesives, avoiding excessive force.
  • Be cautious near the left edge and fingerprint sensor to prevent damaging the ribbon cable.

Step 4 | Slide the opening pick

Inserting the pick too far may damage internal components.

  • Starting from the center, cut up and down the right side with an opening pick.
  • When near the fingerprint sensor or cameras, limit the pick's insertion to halfway into the phone.

Step 5

Glass can break easily near corners.

  • Apply more heat if the adhesive becomes stuck.
  • Place an opening pick in the upper-right corner.
  • Insert another opening pick to cut the adhesive at the bottom-right corner, leaving it in place.

Step 6

Apply heat to the left side of the rear panel using a heat gun, hair dryer, or iOpener for 3 minutes.

Step 7

Careful handling is required when approaching corners, as glass is most susceptible to breakage.

  • Insert an opening pick into the lower-left corner of the rear panel.
  • Use another opening pick to carefully cut adhesive along the left edge of the rear panel.
  • Avoid inserting picks more than halfway on the left edge near the fingerprint sensor, as this may damage internal wiring.
  • Picks may fall out as separation occurs; this is normal.

Apply caution when using heat sources.

  • Insert opening pick into upper-left corner of rear panel and cut adhesive.
  • Use iOpener, hair dryer, or heat gun to apply additional heat as needed along top edge.

Step 9

Separate the right side of the rear cover first.

  • Tilt the cover up along the left edge to expose the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable.
  • Do not pull out the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable yet — risk of damage.

  • The fingerprint sensor cover might stay attached to the midframe.

Step 10 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor

Use the spudger to carefully lift the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable.

  • Position the tip of the spudger under the cable.
  • Pry gently until the cable comes loose from its socket.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Remove the back cover.

  • To re-install:
    • Tweezers to remove remaining adhesive.
    • Clean with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.

Test phone before installing new adhesive.

  • New adhesive on the back cover.
  • Line up glass edge with chassis.
  • Firmly press glass into place.

Step 12 | Remove the fingerprint sensor

Step 12 image

Apply heat using a heat gun, hair dryer, or a heated iOpener on the outside of the fingerprint sensor.

  • Heat until it's slightly too hot to touch, as this will help soften the adhesive underneath.
  • The adhesive should be soft and resistant to tearing when heated correctly.

Step 13

Avoid touching the fingerprint sensor to prevent contamination.

  • Remove the fingerprint sensor from the device.

To install or reinstall a new fingerprint sensor:

  • Tweezers will be used to remove as much adhesive residue as possible.
  • Clean the area with 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

When reinstalling an existing sensor, apply pre-cut adhesive sheet to ensure proper adhesion.
