Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Display Replacement

Discharging the battery below 25% is crucial; a punctured battery can catch fire and/or explode.

  • Check that your replacement screen matches your phone's specifications before proceeding.
  • This guide only replaces the display, leaving original frame, logic board, and battery intact.
  • Removing the rear glass cover requires replacement adhesive; ensure you have it or use tape as a substitute.
  • Note that opening the Samsung Galaxy Note8 will compromise its waterproof sealing.
  • Inspect the frame for damage before proceeding; if damaged, replace it to ensure proper screen mounting and pressure distribution.

Be aware that separating the display from the frame usually damages the display; proceed only if you intend to replace it.

Step 1 | Back Cover

Step 1 image

Turn off your phone completely.

  • iOpener preparation: Soften adhesive for removal.
  • Apply iOpener to the back, along the side of the power button.

Step 2

Apply a suction handle to lift the back cover, creating an opening for a pick.

  • Insert the opening pick at a lower angle from underneath, starting at the middle of the side.
  • Cut the adhesive while pulling up with the suction handle, avoiding excessive force that may break the back cover.
  • Do not lever the opening pick too much — it may damage the back cover.

  • Move the pick towards the bottom corner and leave it there to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

If movement becomes difficult, reheat the iOpener and apply it to the back cover again as needed.

  • Introduce a second pick at the top corner for additional access.

Step 3

Place a new opening pick near the top right corner.

  • Gently move it along the top edge, turning the corner as needed.
  • If necessary, use an iOpener to reheat the area.
  • Leave the pick at the top right corner to prevent adhesive from reforming.

  • Adhesive Pick
  • Rotate the device.
  • Separate adhesive at the bottom using an additional opening pick.
  • Leave the pick at the bottom right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 5

Ensure all three sides of the adhesive are separated.

  • Lift the back cover slowly, do not force it open.

If the back cover doesn't budge or starts to bend, use an iOpener to soften the adhesive again.

Take care when flipping the back cover open to avoid damaging the fingerprint sensor connector.

  • If necessary, disconnect the fingerprint sensor connector as described in the next step.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Check if the fingerprint sensor connector has already been disconnected after opening the back cover.

  • If not, use a pair of tweezers to carefully disconnect the fingerprint sensor connector.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Remove the back cover.

  • Preparation for reassembly: Remove any remaining adhesive.
  • Clean glued areas with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

Step 8 | NFC Antenna and Charging Coil Assembly

Disconnect the ten Phillips #00 screws.

Step 9

Insert an opening pick at the top edge, working it into the gap between the NFC antenna and charging coil assembly and the case.

Lever the assembly gently from the top to dislodge it from the case.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Remove the charging coil and NFC antenna assembly by carefully pulling it upwards.

Note: The bottom left part may be slightly attached with adhesive, require gentle prying or careful release.

Step 11 | Battery Disconnect

Step 11 image

Disconnect the battery connector using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 12 | Display Replacement

Step 12 image

Remove the six Phillips #00 screws from the loudspeaker assembly located at the bottom of the phone.

Step 13

Careful not to damage nearby components, use the flat end of a spudger to gently pry up the loudspeaker assembly.

  • Pry above the mainboard and the antenna cable.
  • Once pried, remove the loudspeaker assembly.

Step 14

Disconnect the display and touchscreen cables using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the display for at least 2 minutes.

  • Reheat and reapply as needed until the phone is warm enough.
  • FOLLOW iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

If your display glass is cracked, tape over it with clear packing tape to contain further breakage and prevent bodily harm.

  • Lay overlapping strips of clear packing tape across the Note8's display until fully covered.
  • This will keep glass shards contained and provide structural integrity when prying/lifting the display.

WEAR safety glasses to protect eyes from potential glass shattering during repair.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Apply a suction cup to the lower edge of the phone when it's warm to the touch.

  • If the screen is cracked, use strong tape or superglue to secure the suction cup in place and allow it to cure.
  • Lift on the suction cup with a halberd spudger or an opening pick inserted under the display assembly.

Due to curved glass, insert tools at an angle rather than parallel to the phone's plane.

  • Slide the halberd spudger/opening pick along the lower edge of the phone to cut adhesive, leaving an opening pick at a corner to prevent resealing.
  • Avoid cutting the flex cable located below the power button midpoint.

Continue inserting another opening pick as you slide the tool along the side of the phone.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Slide the halberd spudger/opening pick to the upper corner, cutting adhesive.

  • Insert a new opening pick in each corner and side.
  • Repeat heating and cutting procedure for all sides.

Be cautious near top edge to avoid damaging sensors and speaker.

Reheat with iOpener if cutting becomes difficult.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Identify the display cable and fingerprint flex cable threaded through the mid frame.

  • Use caution when extracting these cables due to their narrow openings in the midframe, as they may require some force to remove.
  • Cut the adhesive on all sides of the phone to allow for easy removal.

When using a small suction cup to lift the phone upwards, apply gentle pressure to avoid damaging any internal components.

Step 19

Step 19 image

Removing old adhesive residue is crucial for proper installation.

  • Use a lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol (90+%) to clean glued areas.
  • Check the frame for bends and remnants of glue or glass. Replace if necessary.
  • Ensure all old adhesive is removed to prevent damage during new display installation.
