Samsung Galaxy Note20 USB-C Port Replacement

Discharge the battery to below 25% and take precautions if it's swollen before disassembling to prevent thermal events or injuries.

  • Follow this guide for replacing the USB-C port on your Samsung Galaxy Note20.

Step 1 | Heat the rear cover

Step 1 image

Completely power off your device before disassembly.

  • Apply a preheated iOpener to the left side of the rear cover for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating and potential damage to the screen, internal battery, and plastic rear cover.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Do not damage internal components by inserting the pick too far.

  • Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the rear cover, as close as possible.
  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong force until a gap forms between the rear cover and frame.

If having trouble, apply more heat and try again; age may affect difficulty level.

  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap, but do not insert more than 5 mm.

Step 3 | Begin to cut the adhesive

Insert the opening pick no deeper than 5 mm to avoid damaging internal components.

  • Slide the pick along the left edge towards the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the bottom left corner to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Cut along the perimeter of the rear cover

Adhesive may re-seal if not properly treated.

  • Heat and cut the remaining three sides of the rear cover.
  • In each corner, insert a new opening pick in the gap left by previous picks.
  • Leave an opening pick in each corner to prevent re-sealing.

If still attached, try slicing through adhesive again with an opening pick.

Step 5 | Remove the rear cover

Lift the rear cover straight up to remove it.

Step 6 | Remove the motherboard shield

Step 6 image

Some screws may have threadlocker, making removal with a Phillips screwdriver more challenging.

  • Remove the six 4.0 mm Phillips screws securing the motherboard shield using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Keep track of each removed screw to ensure it is replaced exactly where it was found.

Step 7

Use a spudger to pry up the battery press connector, holding the motherboard shield out of the way with a pair of tweezers.

  • Pry only under the edge of the connector to avoid damaging the socket and surrounding components.
  • To re-attach, align the connector carefully and press down on one side until it clicks into place; repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle.
  • Misaligned connector can bend pins, causing permanent damage.

Step 9 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Grasp the motherboard shield firmly with your fingers.

  • Pry the wireless charging coil upwards and away from the device, taking care not to apply excessive force on the wireless charging coil.
  • The wireless charging coil is secured with a small amount of light adhesive.
  • Be cautious not to damage any surrounding components while removing the wireless charging coil.

  • Once free, remove the wireless charging coil.

Step 11 | Unscrew the loudspeaker

Step 11 image

Unscrew the loudspeaker's retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • There are five screws in total, each with a 4.0 mm diameter.
  • Remove all the screws to release the loudspeaker from its mounting position.

Step 12 | Remove the loudspeaker

Do not allow the tweezers to come into contact with the battery, as this could lead to chemical leaks or thermal damage.

  • Insert the spudger near the top left screw hole and pry up the loudspeaker from its frame.
  • Lift the loudspeaker using a pair of tweezers and carefully remove it.

Step 13 | Disconnect the interconnect cables

Insert the pointed end of a spudger under the right side screw hole on the USB-C port.

  • Pry up the USB-C port to loosen it from the frame.
  • The USB-C port may fling out of its slot while it is being pried. Be cautious not to damage the surrounding area.
  • A red rubber gasket holds the USB-C port in place. Apply steady force to pry up and gradually loosen the port from its slot.

Step 22 | Remove the USB-C port
