Samsung Galaxy Note20 Battery Replacement

Always discharge the battery below 25% before starting disassembly to minimize the risk of a thermal event.

  • If your phone has a swollen battery, take necessary precautions before proceeding.
  • Follow this guide for steps on removing and replacing the Samsung Galaxy Note20's battery.

Step 1 | Heat the rear cover

Step 1 image

Completely power off your phone before starting disassembly.

  • Apply an iOpener to the left side of the rear cover for one minute.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate to warm the area carefully (be cautious not to overheat and damage the phone's screen, internal battery, or plastic rear cover).

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction cup to the heated edge of the rear cover, as close to the edge as possible.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the rear cover and the frame.

Depending on your phone's age, this may be difficult. If you encounter issues, reapply heat and try again.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, but do not insert more than 5 mm to avoid damaging internal components.

Step 3 | Begin to cut the adhesive

Do not insert the pick more than 5 mm into the phone's adhesive to avoid damaging internal components.

  • Slide the opening pick along the left edge towards the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick inserted in the bottom left corner after cutting to prevent re-sealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Cut along the perimeter of the rear cover

  • Heat and cut the adhesive along the three remaining sides of the rear cover.
  • Insert new opening picks into the gaps created by previous picks in each corner.
  • Leave a pick in each corner to prevent re-sealing as you proceed.

If still attached, try slicing through adhesive again with an opening pick.

Step 5 | Remove the rear cover

Lift the rear cover straight up to release it.

Step 6 | Remove the motherboard shield

Step 6 image

Screws with threadlocker may require extra effort for removal.

  • Remove the six 4.0 mm screws securing the motherboard shield using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Keep track of each screw and ensure it is returned to its original location.

Step 7

Handle the motherboard shield with care, as its edges are thin and sharp.

  • Use a pair of tweezers to lift up and flip back the motherboard shield.

Step 8 | Disconnect the battery

Avoid damaging socket and components by prying only under edge of the connector.

  • Hold motherboard shield out of way using tweezers.
  • Pry up battery press connector with pointed end of a spudger.

Do not press down on middle; misaligned pins can bend and cause permanent damage.

  • Re-attach by aligning and pressing one side until it clicks, then repeat on other side.

Step 9 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Grasp the motherboard shield carefully with your fingers.

  • Pry the wireless charging coil upwards, loosening its hold on the device.
  • The wireless charging coil is secured by light adhesive; be cautious not to damage it.
  • Remove the wireless charging coil.

Step 11 | Unscrew the loudspeaker

Careful not to damage the battery.

  • Insert the spudger near the top left screw hole of the loudspeaker and pry it up from the frame.
  • Use tweezers to lift and remove the loudspeaker.

Avoid puncturing or bending the battery, as this may cause leakage or a thermal event.

Step 13 | Disconnect the interconnect cables

Bending the battery can cause a thermal event or leak hazardous chemicals.

  • Apply steady force to the suction cup to create a gap between the battery's bottom edge and the frame.
  • If separation is difficult, apply more drops of isopropyl alcohol and wait two minutes before retrying.

Step 23

Insert opening pick into gap between bottom edge of battery and frame.

  • Push opening pick under battery to cut through adhesive and detach from frame.
  • Do not insert opening pick more than halfway to avoid damaging fingerprint sensor.
  • Do not attempt to forcefully lever battery out; apply additional drops of alcohol if necessary.

Step 24

Never reuse a battery that's already been removed — risk of electric shock and damage.

  • Pull up on the suction cup to remove the battery.
  • Use isopropyl alcohol to loosen battery adhesive; the battery will come out easily once penetrated.
  • Before reassembly, wipe off or let dry any remaining isopropyl solution in the phone.
  • Replace old adhesive with stretch release adhesive strips, double sided tape, or pre-cut adhesive for new battery.
