Samsung Galaxy Note5 Display Assembly Replacement

The process of separating the display from the frame may destroy the display, proceed with caution.

  • Ensure you have the correct replacement part, which may be pre-installed in a new frame if purchased separately.
  • If your phone's original frame is damaged or bent, replace it before proceeding to avoid display damage from uneven pressure.

This guide assumes you're replacing only the display assembly, leaving the logic board and battery intact. If your replacement screen comes with a new frame, refer to a different procedure for transplanting your phone's internals and installing a new battery.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole in the SIM card tray at the top of the phone.

  • Press to eject the tray, applying some force if necessary.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | S-Pen

Step 2 image

Push the S-Pen button with your fingernail until it clicks.

  • The S-Pen should pop out of the phone.
  • Once ejected, remove the S-Pen.

Step 3 | Rear Glass

Step 3 image

Apply packing tape evenly across cracked glass back.

  • Use a heated iOpener on the bottom of the device for 2 minutes.
  • Reheat and reapply as necessary to achieve optimal temperature.
  • Follow iOpener instructions to prevent overheating.

When using alternative heat sources, be cautious not to overheat the phone; OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

Step 4

Step 4 image

The suction cup may not stick properly if the phone's back cover is cracked.

  • Apply a suction cup as close as possible to the bottom edge of the phone.
  • (If stuck, use strong tape or superglue for better grip.)
  • Lift the phone on the suction cup and carefully insert an opening pick under the rear glass.

Apply minimal force to avoid breaking the fragile rear glass, and never use metal tools for prying.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Reapply heat to the edge with an iOpener for one more minute.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Slide the pick down the bottom edge of the phone, moving slowly to avoid losing it between the seams.

If sliding becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Leave the pick in place to keep the adhesive from resealing. Then, grab another pick for the next step.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3

The glass is extremely fragile due to its curved shape.

  • Insert another pick and slowly cut around the corner of the phone, being careful not to apply too much pressure.
  • If the corner feels hard to slice through, reapply an iOpener and wait for it to penetrate before continuing.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the long edge.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Continue with the heating and cutting process for the other three sides.

  • Insert a new opening pick into each edge after completing one side, leaving it in place as you move on to the next.
  • Repeat this process until all four sides have been cut.

Step 10

Step 10 image

  • Insert an opening pick into the edge of the screen and gently pry loose any remaining adhesive.
  • Lift the glass away from the phone and set it aside.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Do not use excessive force when reattaching the back cover.

  • Remove remaining adhesive residue from the back cover and phone chassis using tweezers and high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) on a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Test your repair by turning on your phone before applying new adhesive.

Applying New Adhesive:

The replacement adhesive comes pre-cut to match the back cover's contours. If not available, use high-bond double-sided tape (e.g., Tesa 61395), noting that it may leave gaps vulnerable to liquid intrusion.

  • Apply strong, steady pressure for several minutes under heavy objects to form a good bond.

Alternative Method:

The phone will not be waterproof with this method.

  • Remove large chunks of adhesive that may obstruct the back cover's installation.
  • Heat the back cover and apply pressure to secure it in place.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Remove all 20 3.3mm Phillips screws.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 3

Ensure the SIM tray has been ejected prior to this step.

  • Midframe: Hold by edges and lift upwards, applying gentle pressure against battery with one finger.
  • Be prepared for adhesive in corners, apply constant force until the midframe separates from display assembly.

The use of excessive force may cause damage to surrounding components.

Midframe: Remove once separated.

Disconnect the daughterboard connector from the motherboard using the flat end of a spudger.

  • Remove the motherboard.

Step 22 | Display Assembly

Step 22 image

Do not overheat the device — follow iOpener instructions carefully.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the left display edge for about two minutes.
  • Reheat and reapply as needed, until the phone is sufficiently warm.

Be aware that display adhesive can be stronger than back cover glue — use a hair dryer or heat gun if necessary to weaken it.

Step 23

Step 23 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert an opening pick between the plastic frame and display assembly on the same edge.

  • The pick should be above the pink shielding layer, covering the OLED panel.
  • If you see the pick through the front glass, it's inserted too high. Remove the pick and try again.

Step 24

Step 24 image

Thumbnail 3

Slide the opening pick down the battery-side of the phone, separating the adhesive.

Stop at the bottom of the battery to avoid damaging delicate capacitive buttons.

  • Go slowly to prevent the tip from slipping out of the seam.
  • If sliding becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Leaving one pick in place can help prevent the glue from re-adhering.

Step 25

Step 25 image

Apply heat with caution to avoid damage or injury.

  • Heat an iOpener and apply it to a non-battery area of the phone.
  • Gently insert a pick no more than 0.25 inches (~6 mm) into the bottom edge, near the headphone jack.
  • Slowly slide the pick along the edge until just past the charging port.

Step 26
