The process of separating the display from the frame may destroy the display, proceed with caution.
This guide assumes you're replacing only the display assembly, leaving the logic board and battery intact. If your replacement screen comes with a new frame, refer to a different procedure for transplanting your phone's internals and installing a new battery.
Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole in the SIM card tray at the top of the phone.
Push the S-Pen button with your fingernail until it clicks.
Apply packing tape evenly across cracked glass back.
Follow iOpener instructions to prevent overheating.
When using alternative heat sources, be cautious not to overheat the phone; OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.
The suction cup may not stick properly if the phone's back cover is cracked.
Apply minimal force to avoid breaking the fragile rear glass, and never use metal tools for prying.
Reapply heat to the edge with an iOpener for one more minute.
Slide the pick down the bottom edge of the phone, moving slowly to avoid losing it between the seams.
If sliding becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.
Leave the pick in place to keep the adhesive from resealing. Then, grab another pick for the next step.
The glass is extremely fragile due to its curved shape.
Apply a heated iOpener to the long edge.
Continue with the heating and cutting process for the other three sides.
Do not use excessive force when reattaching the back cover.
The replacement adhesive comes pre-cut to match the back cover's contours. If not available, use high-bond double-sided tape (e.g., Tesa 61395), noting that it may leave gaps vulnerable to liquid intrusion.
The phone will not be waterproof with this method.
Remove all 20 3.3mm Phillips screws.
Ensure the SIM tray has been ejected prior to this step.
The use of excessive force may cause damage to surrounding components.
Midframe: Remove once separated.
Lift the battery connector straight up using the flat end of a spudger.
Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the earpiece connector.
Disconnect the touchscreen connector with the flat end of a spudger.
Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the display connector.
Disconnect the navigation buttons connector with the flat end of a spudger.
Disconnect the antenna cable using the pointed end of a spudger.
Hold the motherboard by the top corners and hinge it upwards.
Do not remove the motherboard — it is still attached to the daughterboard.
Disconnect the daughterboard connector from the motherboard using the flat end of a spudger.
Do not overheat the device — follow iOpener instructions carefully.
Be aware that display adhesive can be stronger than back cover glue — use a hair dryer or heat gun if necessary to weaken it.
Insert an opening pick between the plastic frame and display assembly on the same edge.
Slide the opening pick down the battery-side of the phone, separating the adhesive.
Stop at the bottom of the battery to avoid damaging delicate capacitive buttons.
Leaving one pick in place can help prevent the glue from re-adhering.
Apply heat with caution to avoid damage or injury.
Leave the pick in place as you proceed to the next step, but do not apply excessive pressure.
Insert the opening pick at the bottom edge of the display, directly below the daughterboard ribbon cable, to cut across the other capacitive button.
Do not remove the pick until instructed.
Apply a heated iOpener to the non-battery edge.
Insert the opening pick into the non-battery edge as deep as possible to cut through the wider swath of adhesive.
If cutting is difficult, apply more heat as needed to prevent damage.
Heat an iOpener and apply it to the non-battery-edge of the phone.
Use the opening picks to remove any remaining adhesive.
Remove all old adhesive to avoid display damage.
