Samsung Galaxy Note5 Battery Replacement

Never heat the phone — risk of fire or explosion.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling.
  • If using a swollen battery, wear eye protection and exercise caution, or seek professional help.
  • Optional: inject isopropyl alcohol (90+%) around back cover edges to loosen adhesive.

After replacement, calibrate the new battery to ensure proper functioning.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or a straightened paperclip into the small hole in the SIM card tray at the top of the phone.

  • Press to eject the tray, using some force if necessary.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | S-Pen

Push the S-Pen button until it clicks and pops out with your fingernail.

  • Release the S-Pen from its slot in the phone.

Step 3 | Rear Glass

Step 3 image

Careful handling is necessary when working with a cracked glass back.

  • Tape over the entire surface with packing tape.
  • Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom of the phone for about two minutes, reapplying as needed.
  • To avoid overheating: follow the manufacturer's instructions and check the temperature regularly.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the phone.

Step 4

Apply a suction cup as close as possible to the bottom edge of the phone.

  • If the phone's back cover is cracked, the suction cup may not stick.
  • Use strong tape or superglue the suction cup in place and allow it to cure before proceeding

Lift on the suction cup and insert an opening pick under the rear glass.

Be careful not to apply too much force, as the rear glass is very fragile and can break with metal tools or excessive force.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Reheat the edge with an iOpener for 1 more minute.

Step 6

Insert a pick at the phone's bottom edge.

  • Slowly slide it down for a good fit.
  • If necessary, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Leave the pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing. Grab another pick before proceeding.

Step 7

The curved back of the phone makes its edges particularly fragile — be gentle when cutting.

  • Insert another pick and carefully cut around the phone's corner.
  • If the glass feels hard to slice through, reapply an iOpener before continuing.

Step 8

Apply a heated iOpenter to the long edge.

Step 9

Continue the heating and cutting process on the other three sides.

  • Apply a new opening pick to each side before moving on.
  • This will keep the adhesive loose, preventing it from sealing again.

Step 10

Insert an opening pick into the gap between the glass and the frame.

  • Work the pick around the edges, prying up any remaining adhesive.
  • Lift the glass panel out of its housing and remove it from the phone.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Incorrect reassembly may lead to water ingress.

  • Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from phone and chassis.
  • Clean adhesion areas with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, swiping only in one direction.

Ensure your phone powers on before reinstalling the back cover.

  • Choose pre-cut adhesive sheet for optimal fit or use Tesa 61395 double-sided tape (not recommended due to gaps).
  • Apply strong, steady pressure for several minutes by placing under heavy books.

If skipping adhesive replacement, remove large chunks and apply heat with pressure for a secure fit.

Step 12 | Midframe

Step 12 image

Remove the 20 Phillips screws, each with a head diameter of 3.3 mm.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Ensure the SIM tray has been ejected prior to this step.

  • Hold the midframe by the edges and lift upwards while applying downward pressure on the battery with one finger.
  • Apply constant force until the midframe separates from the display assembly, noting that there is a small amount of adhesive in each corner.
  • Once separated, carefully remove the midframe.

Batteries can release hazardous materials if damaged.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the battery for 1 minute to loosen adhesive.
  • Alternatively, apply isopropyl alcohol to each corner and let it penetrate for several minutes.

Use minimal force; avoid deforming or using metal tools on the battery.

Remove old battery from case.

Do not reuse removed battery — potential safety hazard.

Replace with new battery.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth.
  • Secure new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape, applying it around the perimeter of the compartment, not directly to the battery.

Press battery firmly into place for 5-10 seconds.
