Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Display Replacement

Replacing the display without addressing any damage to the frame may result in improper mounting and potential screen damage.

  • The process of separating the display from the frame often damages the display itself, so proceed with caution if you intend to replace it only.
  • Assess the condition of your device's frame before proceeding; replacement is necessary if damaged or bent for proper new screen installation.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Insert a fingernail or plastic opening tool into the divot to the left of the rear-facing camera.

  • Pry and twist the flexible rear cover gently off the back of the phone.

Step 2 | Battery

Step 2 image

Insert a fingertip or plastic opening tool into the recess at the bottom right corner of the battery, then lift upwards.

  • Extract the battery.

Step 3 | Display

Step 3 image

Avoid overheating the phone to prevent damage.

  • Use an iOpener to warm the left edge of the display for about two minutes.
  • Reapply the iOpener as needed until the phone is sufficiently warmed.

Alternative heat sources like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate can be used:

  • Avoid applying excessive heat to prevent damage to the display and internal battery.

Apply a suction cup near the heated edge of the phone once the screen is warm.

  • If your display is severely cracked, try using strong tape or superglue to secure the suction cup in place and allow it to cure before proceeding.
  • Lift the display on the suction cup, then insert an opening pick under the display assembly.

Step 5

Slide a pick along the left edge of the display to separate the adhesive.

The display and digitizer cables near the top may interfere with your pick, so be careful not to pry too deeply.

  • If cutting becomes difficult, reheat the iOpener and reapply it.
  • Leave the first pick in place and obtain a second one before proceeding.

Step 6

Apply a heated iOpener to the bottom of the phone.

  • Slide an opening pick along the bottom, inserting it no more than 0.25 inches (6 mm) to avoid damage.

Insert a 0.5 inch opening pick into the left side of the bottom edge.

  • Push the pick slowly and gently to avoid damaging the capacitive button ribbon cable underneath the display.
  • If difficult, reapply an iOpener.
  • Leave the pick in place once it has cut through the adhesive to prevent resealing.

Insert a 0.5mm opening pick into the right side of the bottom edge of the phone.

  • Push the pick in slowly and gently to avoid tearing the delicate capacitive button ribbon cable underneath the display.

  • If it's difficult to insert the pick, reapply an iOpener.

Once the pick has cut through the adhesive, leave it in place to prevent resealing.

Step 9

Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the phone.

  • Slide an opening pick along the right edge of the display to separate the adhesive underneath, but do not insert it more than 1 inch (25 mm) underneath to avoid damaging the home button cable.
  • The display and digitizer cables are near the top; be cautious not to interfere with them if you pry too deeply.

Do not remove the pick as this can cause the adhesive to re-adhere. Leave it in place and grab a second pick for the next step.

Step 10

Slide a precision opening pick gently under the top edge of the display, keeping it 0.25 inches (6 mm) from the surface.

Avoid aggressive prying to prevent damage to the front-facing sensors and speaker assembly.

You may need to return to this step after the rest of the display is loose for a complete separation.

Step 11

Use a pick to gently pry apart any remaining adhesive.

Remove the display.

Carefully remove all old adhesive residue from the frame, taking care to avoid any small glass fragments.

  • Use 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth or coffee filter to clean adhesion areas. Swipe in one direction only.
  • If the frame is bent or glue/glass remnants remain, new display will not mount correctly and may be damaged.

Use custom-cut double-sided tape for secure mounting.

  • Apply tape to the back of the new screen.
  • Carefully feed display cable through frame.
  • Align and press screen into place.
