Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Display Replacement

Opening the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) will damage its waterproof sealing.

  • Use this guide to replace only the display, leaving the original frame, logic board, and battery intact.
  • Verify you have a replacement display with adhesive seals, not one pre-installed in a new frame.

Separating the display from the frame usually destroys it, so only follow this guide if replacing the display.

  • You'll need replacement adhesive for reattaching the new display and back cover during reassembly.
  • Make sure to replace the adhesive seals to maintain water protection in your phone.

Step 1 | Back Cover Removal

Step 1 image

Power off your phone before disassembly.

  • iOpener must be applied for at least two minutes to loosen back cover adhesive.
  • Repeat iOpener application as needed during back cover removal.

Adhesive on the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) is very strong. Consider using a heat gun, hair dryer, or hot plate if necessary — be careful not to overheat, which can damage AMOLED display and internal battery.

Insert an opening pick at the bottom end of your phone.

  • If necessary, use a suction handle to create a small gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Slide the opening pick's tip to the bottom left corner and cut the adhesive with it.
  • Leave the opening pick in the bottom left corner to prevent resealing.
  • Insert another opening pick on the left side of the phone and start cutting the adhesive.

Apply an opening pick to each edge of the phone, leaving one in each corner.

Be cautious: the back cover is under tension and may break if not loose enough.

If the adhesive becomes difficult to cut, reuse an iOpener as needed.

  • Insert a second opening pick on the right side of the phone.
  • Flip it sideways until you can grasp the back cover securely.

Step 4

Do not apply new adhesive to surfaces still stuck together — adhesion failure.

  • Remove the back cover.
  • Scrape off remaining adhesive from both back cover and with a credit card or similar tool.
  • Clean areas with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

Do not touch broken display glass to avoid injury.

  • Apply an iOpener to the display for at least two minutes to loosen adhesive, reheating as needed.
  • If display glass is cracked, cover with overlapping clear packing tape to contain breakage and prevent bodily harm.

Wear safety glasses during repair to protect your eyes from flying glass shards.

Apply a suction cup to the upper edge when display is warm.

  • Lift on suction cup and insert an opening pick under display assembly.

  • Avoid flex cable near volume buttons with your cutting tool.
  • Continue sliding opening pick towards bottom of phone to cut adhesive completely.

Leave an opening pick on the bottom left edge to prevent resealing.

  • The home button and soft key cables are located beneath the display assembly's bottom part.
  • Only insert the tip of the opening pick when working with these cables.

Slide the tip along the phone's bottom edge to cut the adhesive carefully.

  • Continue cutting the adhesive on the remaining sides.
  • Leave an opening pick in each corner.

Do not open the phone fully yet — home and menu button cables risk damage.

  • Lift the upper edge of the display assembly while keeping it connected to the mid frame.
  • Thread the display flex cable through the mid frame to prevent snagging.

Check for stuck home button or soft key button cables before removing the display completely.

  • If a cable sticks, use tweezers or an opening pick to gently peel it off from the display assembly.
