Samsung Epic 4G Touch Rear Facing Camera Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing the rear-facing camera.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Insert a plastic opening tool or your fingernail into the opening near the left side of the headphone jack.

  • Pry the tool downward to release the rear case from its clips on the midframe.

Remove the rear case.

Step 3 | microSD Card

Use the flat end of a spudger or your fingernail to press the microSD card deeper into its slot.

  • Press until you hear a click, then release the card.
  • The card will pop out of its slot.

Do not force the microSD card — risk of damage to the card or the device's slot.

  • During reassembly, press the microSD card into its slot until it clicks in place.

Step 4

Remove the micoSD card from its slot.

Step 5 | Battery

Insert a plastic opening tool into the gap between the battery and midframe, near the bottom left corner.

  • Pry the battery upward from its housing by pushing the plastic opening tool downward.

Remove the battery from the midframe.

Step 7 | Plastic Midframe

Remove the six 4.0 mm Phillips #00 screws holding the midframe in place.

Prying at incorrect points may make midframe removal difficult.

  • Locate the first divot to the left of the micro-USB port, visible in this display assembly shot with glass facing down.
  • The second divot is located to the right of the micro-USB port, near the phone's corner.
  • Finding these points will aid in midframe removal. Alternatively, look for a third point about two inches right of the volume control toggle or slightly right of the volume button if needed.

Insert a plastic opening tool to the left of the micro-USB port, prying it gently between the midframe and display to create an opening.

Position the plastic spudger at the right edge of the micro-USB port.

  • Pry between the midframe and the display with a gentle, sweeping motion.

Step 11

Prize the area approximately 2 inches to the right of the volume control with a prying tool.

  • Target the seam between the midframe and the front panel assembly.

Step 12

Remove the micro-USB connector from the front panel assembly.

  • Lift up the assembly, moving it away from the midframe.
  • Continue to pull until the assembly is completely free.

Step 13 | Motherboard Connectors

Locate and disconnect the following cables:

  • Cable connector for headphone jack/vibrator
  • Cable connector for front-facing camera
  • Cable connector for digitizer
  • Cable connector for display

Step 14 | Headphone Jack/Vibrator Connector

Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the headphone jack/vibrator assembly cable.

Step 15 | Motherboard Assembly

Disconnect the front-facing camera cable with the flat end of a spudger.

Step 16

Careful handling is necessary to avoid damaging the digitizer display cable.

  • Disconnect the digitizer display cable.

Step 17

Disconnect the display cable connector using a spudger.

Step 18

Remove the two 3 mm Phillips #00 screws.

Be careful not to snag the motherboard on any cables.

  • Lift the micro-USB end of the motherboard away from the display assembly.
  • Pull it down carefully, keeping an eye out for cables that may interfere with removal.

Step 20 | Microphone Cover

Align the microphone cover with the notch and peg in the display assembly.

  • Ensure a secure fit before sealing your device.
  • Verify the microphone cover is seated properly in its slot on the display assembly.
  • If it remains stuck to the microphone, place it back in the notch to avoid losing it.

Step 21 | Rear Facing Camera

Insert the pointed end of a spudger into the ZIF connector and gently pry the tab.

Insert a spudger under the rear-facing camera cable and gently pry it loose.

Step 23

Locate and carefully detach the rear-facing camera module from the motherboard.
