OnePlus 9 5G Screen Replacement

This guide helps you replace the screen on your OnePlus 9 5G. You'll also need replacement adhesives for the rear glass and the screen to complete the repair successfully.

  • The success of water resistance after this repair depends on maintaining cleanliness of mating surfaces and accurately reapplying adhesive.
  • After completing this repair, your device will no longer meet its original IP rating. Note that only T-Mobile versions of the OnePlus 9 5G originally had an IP rating.

Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

  • When reinserting the SIM card, ensure it's in the correct orientation inside the tray.
  • If the thin rubber gasket around the SIM tray is damaged or missing, replace it or the entire SIM tray to protect internal components from water and dust damage.

Step 3 | Loosen the rear glass

Step 3 image

Completely power off your phone before proceeding.

  • Apply an iOpener to the rear glass for at least three minutes to loosen adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution to avoid overheating and damaging components such as the display and internal battery.

Step 4 | Insert an opening pick

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction handle near the bottom edge of the rear glass.

  • If the rear glass is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better suction.
  • Alternatively, use strong tape or superglue to secure the suction handle if needed.

Do not apply excessive force that may cause further damage.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with steady force to create a gap between glass and frame.
  • If no gap is created, apply more heat to soften the adhesive further.

Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 5 | Slice the bottom edge adhesive

Step 5 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert the opening pick into the bottom right corner and carefully slice the adhesive.

  • Do not remove the pick — leave it in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 6 | Insert a second opening pick

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2

Apply gentle pressure with an opening pick at the lower edge of the flash assembly.

  • Pry up on the flash assembly using your chosen tool.
  • Do not fully remove the flash assembly during this procedure.
  • The cable is stuck to the motherboard cover and will break if removed prematurely.

Step 14 | Unfasten the motherboard cover

Step 14 image

Remove the motherboard cover using a Phillips screwdriver. The screws are 10 in total, each 3.8 mm long.

Puncture the white water ingress sticker with your Phillips screwdriver to access one of the screws.

Avoid damaging the motherboard — never press down in the middle of a press connector.

  • Disconnect the battery cable by prying the connector straight up with a spudger.
  • To re-attach, align and press down on one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other.
  • Avoid pressing in the middle of the connector to prevent pin damage.

Step 19 | Unfasten the daughterboard cover

Step 19 image

Remove the daughterboard cover using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Puncture the water ingress sticker if it covers one of the screws.
  • Remove the five 3.8 mm-long screws securing the daughterboard cover.

Step 20 | Pry up the daughterboard cover

Step 20 image

Apply a suction handle to the bottom edge of the screen.

If the display is badly cracked, covering it with clear packing tape may help the suction cup adhere.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force.
  • Insert an iFlex between the screen and frame, making sure it's underneath the screen, not the plastic frame.
  • If the iFlex won't insert easily, apply more heat to the bottom edge and try again.

As a last resort, superglue can be used to secure the suction cup to the broken screen.
