OnePlus 8T Battery Replacement

Discharging below 25% prior to disassembly minimizes thermal risks in case of accidental damage.

  • Use this guide for replacing a worn-out or dead OnePlus 8T battery. If swollen, take necessary precautions.
  • Purchase replacement adhesive for reattaching components during reassembly.

Step 1 | Heat the rear glass

Risk of screen damage from excessive heat.

  • Switch off your phone completely.
  • Apply heat to loosen adhesive beneath rear glass using an iOpener for at least 2 minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but exercise caution to avoid overheating the phone and damaging the AMOLED display or internal battery.

Step 2 | Create a gap

Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone, centered on the bottom edge.

  • If the back cover is cracked, use strong tape or superglue the suction handle in place and allow it to cure.
  • Pull on the suction cup to create a gap between the rear glass and frame.

Insert the tip of an opening pick into the gap and slide it to the bottom left corner.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Insert a second opening under the bottom left corner.

  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge to the bottom right corner.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 4 | Slice the adhesive

Reheat the adhesive with the iOpener if it becomes hard to cut.

  • Insert a third opening pick under the bottom right corner.
  • Slide this pick along the right edge to the top right corner.
  • Leave all opening picks in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 5 | Slice the adhesive

Insert a fourth opening pick into the top right corner.

  • Slide it along the top edge to the top left corner, cutting the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the remaining adhesive

Insert a fifth opening pick at the top left corner.

  • Slide it down to the bottom left corner, following the left edge to cut any remaining adhesive.

Step 7 | Remove the rear glass

  • Remove the rear glass.
  • Apply strong and steady pressure to the installed back cover for several minutes.
  • Using a stack of heavy books can help secure the adhesive bond.

Step 8 | Unscrew the motherboard cover

Remove the motherboard cover using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • The screws are 9 in total and each is 3.8 mm long.

Step 9 | Unclip the motherboard cover

  • Opening Pick: Insert the tip into the bottom left corner of the motherboard cover.
  • Lift the motherboard cover up using the opening pick to release the plastic clips.

Step 10 | Remove the motherboard cover

Remove the motherboard cover.

Step 11 | Disconnect the battery

  • Use a spudger to pry the battery connector straight up from its socket.

Step 12 | Disconnect the flex cables

Remove the covering flex cables using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 13 | Uncover the battery

Do not crease the cables — damage may result.

  • Bend the flex cables downward towards the bottom of the phone.
  • Maintain the cables in a way that they do not interfere with the battery.

Step 14 | Pull up the battery

Peel back the red pull tab and black sticker from the left edge of the battery.

  • Pull the tab up with slow and steady force to separate the battery from its adhesive.

Step 15 | Pull up the battery

Peel back the red pull tab and black sticker from the right edge of the battery.

  • Pull the tab up with slow and steady force to separate the battery from the adhesive holding it in place.

Step 16 | Remove the battery

Remove the battery.
