OnePlus 8 Motherboard Replacement

Inspect your OnePlus 8 smartphone to identify faulty components before attempting repairs.

  • Check the battery and CPU for damage or malfunction.
  • Connect your device to a computer to verify that the issue is with the Motherboard.

Ensure the phone is completely powered off and disconnected from any external power source before proceeding.

Step 1 | Heat the rear glass

Step 1 image

Power down your phone and disconnect all cables.

  • Apply an iOpener to the rear glass for two minutes or use a hair dryer/heat gun/hot plate, but be cautious of damage risk.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the center of the bottom edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If your display is badly cracked, cover it with a layer of clear packing tape to help the suction cup adhere.
  • Alternatively, you can pull using very strong tape instead of a suction cup.
  • Or, as a last resort, try supergluing the suction cup to the broken screen.

Use strong, steady force when pulling up on the suction handle to avoid damaging other components.

  • Once a gap is created between the rear glass and frame, insert an opening pick into it.

Step 3 | Slice the bottom edge adhesive

Insert an opening pick into the bottom right corner of the device.

Do not remove the pick until you have completed the repair — the adhesive may re-seal otherwise.

Step 4

  • Place a second opening pick under the bottom edge of the rear glass, into the existing gap.
  • Slide the pick to the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place at the bottom left corner to keep the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 5 | Slice the left edge adhesive

Insufficient heating may cause difficulties when slicing.

  • Reheat the iOpener and apply it to the edge for two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • iFixit Opening Pick insertion:
    • Place a third pick under the bottom left corner of the rear glass.
    • Slide the pick up the left edge, slicing through the adhesive.
    • Leave the pick in place at the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Remove the rear glass.

  • If it still feels stuck, slide an opening pick around the perimeter until it separates completely.

Be careful when handling the rear glass to avoid damage or injury from sharp edges.

During reassembly:

  • Secure the rear glass with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
  • Apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes after installing the rear glass to help the adhesive bond properly.

Step 9 | Unfasten the motherboard cover

Be careful when handling the screw on the right edge — may be covered by a white sticker.

  • Remove the white sticker covering the right-edge screw using your screwdriver tip or tweezers.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove eleven 3.3 mm-long screws holding the motherboard cover in place.

Step 10 | Pry up the motherboard cover

Misaligned connectors can cause pin bending and permanent damage.

  • Use a spudger to disconnect the battery cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket on the bottom left corner of the motherboard.
  • To reattach, carefully align the connector and press down on one side until it clicks into place; repeat on the other side.
