OnePlus 8 Battery Replacement

Discharge battery below 25% before disassembling to prevent fire risk.

  • Determine your OnePlus 8 model: IN2013, IN2017, or IN2019 (UW).
  • For IN2019 models, note that the BLP761 battery will not fit; use BLP763 instead.

If battery is swollen, take precautions and consider replacement.

  • Acquire replacement adhesive for both battery and rear glass to complete repair.
  • Understand that reapplying adhesive may compromise water resistance (IP rating) unless done precisely.

Step 1 | Heat the rear glass

Step 1 image

Power off your phone first to prevent any accidental start-ups.

  • Unplug all cables from your phone's ports.
  • Apply an iOpener to the rear glass for two minutes to loosen adhesives.

Be cautious when using external heat sources: hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle to the center of the bottom edge of the rear glass, as close as possible.

If your display is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better suction or use strong tape instead of a suction cup. If all else fails, superglue the suction cup to the broken screen.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong force to create a gap between the rear glass and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 3 | Slice the bottom edge adhesive

Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to cut the adhesive.

Do not remove the opening pick before replacing the rear glass, or the adhesive may reseal.

Step 4

Insert the second opening pick under the rear glass's bottom edge, into the gap you just created.

  • Slide the opening pick toward the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in place at the bottom left corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 5 | Slice the left edge adhesive

Reheat iOpener and apply to edge for 2 minutes if slicing trouble occurs.

  • Insert third opening pick at bottom left rear glass corner.
  • Slide pick up left edge to slice adhesive.

Leave the pick in top left corner to prevent resealing of adhesive.

Step 6 | Slice the top edge adhesive

  • Remove the rear glass.
  • If stuck, slide an opening pick around entire perimeter until rear glass separates completely.

  • During reassembly:
    • Secure rear glass with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
    • Apply strong, steady pressure to phone for several minutes after installation to help adhesive form a good bond.

Step 9 | Unfasten the motherboard cover

Remove any sticker covering a screw on the right edge of the motherboard cover using the tip of your screwdriver or tweezers.

  • Phillips screwdriver needed. Remove eleven 3.3 mm screws securing the motherboard cover.

  • Use a spudger to disconnect the battery cable by prying the connector straight up from its socket on the bottom left corner of the motherboard.
  • To reattach press connectors, align carefully and press down one side until it clicks into place, then repeat on the other side. Do not press in the middle to avoid pin bending and permanent damage.

Step 13 | Lift the tape on the battery

Puncturing the battery with sharp tools risks chemical leakage and fire.

  • Peel the tape up from the right edge of the battery using a spudger or your fingers.

Step 14 | Lift up the battery

Separate the adhesive securing the battery using the provided red pull tab.

  • Pull the red pull tab away from the top of the battery.
  • Lift the red pull tab up slowly and steadily while holding the phone steady with one hand.
  • If needed, apply an iOpener to the screen side to loosen the adhesive underneath the battery.

Step 15 | Remove the battery

Do not reuse a damaged battery as it poses a fire hazard.

Replace it with a new battery and peel away the extra tape on its left edge.

  • During reassembly, temporarily reconnect the battery to the motherboard before pressing it into place for correct alignment.
  • Disconnect the battery once it is seated.

Apply new adhesive in the old adhesive's frame location, not directly on the battery itself.

  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
  • Firmly press the new battery into place to secure it.
