This guide covers removal and replacement of a faulty fingerprint scanner/home button on the OnePlus 5.
Do not remove the battery as it is unnecessary for this procedure.
Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole below the SIM card tray near the rear cameras.
Press firmly to avoid damaging the tray.
Remove the 2.6 mm T2 screws located above and below the USB-C port on the phone's bottom edge.
Improperly following this opening procedure can damage the display panel.
Do not accidentally power on the phone while working.
This step requires substantial force; consider using a new opening tool with a sharp edge to facilitate the process.
Slide the opening tool along the bottom edge of the phone.
Use an opening tool to lever the first clip out of the frame.
Take extra care when releasing the recessed clip at the top-left corner, as it can be stubborn.
Wiggle the frame gently, focusing on the top and right edge clips.
Careful not to damage the flex cable connecting the back cover and frame.
Remove the 2.6 mm Phillips screw securing the cable bracket.
Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the back cover flex cable from its socket.
Misaligned connectors can cause permanent damage to the pins if pressed incorrectly.
Remove the back cover.
Use the point of a spudger to gently pry up and release the battery connector from its socket.
Remove the six 2.6 mm Phillips screws that secure the loudspeaker to the .
Remove the loudspeaker.
Ensure the display cable connector is securely fastened during reinstallation.
Use the point of a spudger to pry up and disconnect the interconnect flex cable from its socket.
Use the point of a spudger to pry up the fingerprint scanner connector from its socket on the daughterboard.
Slide the spudger tip under the antenna interconnect cable and gently pry up.
Place the flat end of the spudger under the microphone board, twisting gently to loosen the adhesive.
Insert the flat end of a spudger or an opening pick under the daughterboard's right edge.
Pry gently to loosen the daughterboard, but stop if it bends significantly.
If the daughterboard starts to bend, reposition and pry from a different angle.
Approach the daughterboard from the bottom.
Remove the daughterboard.
Insert the flat end of a spudger under the tape covering the fingerprint scanner.
You will not be able to reuse this tape during reinstallation.
Be extremely careful when pulling the flex cable up, as it is very delicate and prone to breaking.
Locate the marked areas on either side of the flex cable.
If the fingerprint scanner does not come loose, ensure that you are pressing the spudger's point against the backside of the scanner as indicated in the first image, and not the metal plate below it.
Loosen the fingerprint scanner from its recess.
Make sure to remove any adhesive liner from the new fingerprint scanner if installing onto a replacement frame.
