This repair replaces a faulty earpiece speaker on OnePlus 5 devices, which involves removing the motherboard. Note that the most challenging aspect of this process is releasing the frame clips.
Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole below the SIM card tray, located near the rear cameras on the edge of the phone.
Remove the two T2 screws, measuring 2.6 mm each, positioned beside the USB-C port at the phone's bottom edge.
High risk of display panel damage if procedure is not followed correctly.
Avoid powering on the phone during disassembly.
Note: This step may require significant force due to tight tolerances; a new opening tool with a sharp edge will aid in this process.
Slide the opening tool along the bottom edge of the phone.
Use a levering tool to disengage the first clip from the surrounding frame.
Continue sliding the opening tool along the long edge, releasing clips as you go.
Be patient with the top-left clip near the front-facing camera — it's recessed and might be tricky to release; use the flat end of a spudger or opening pick for assistance.
Wiggle the frame gently to release the top and right edge clips.
Ensure the top edge clips are secure in place before proceeding.
Careful not to damage the flex cable.
Remove the 2.6 mm Phillips screw securing the cable bracket above the battery.
Pressing down on the middle of the connector may cause permanent damage.
Remove the back cover.
Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully pry up and release the battery connector from its socket.
Remove the six Phillips head screws with a 2.6 mm drive using a screwdriver.
Insert the flat end of a spudger into the speaker assembly's corner.
Pry gently to loosen the speaker from its recess.
Remove the loudspeaker.
Use the pointed end of a spudger to pry up and release the interconnect flex cable from its socket.
Remove the display interconnect cable by gently prying it away with the tip of a spudger near the bottom edge of the motherboard.
Insert the spudger under the antenna interconnect cable, connected above the vibration motor.
Locate the small square antenna connector attached to the motherboard near the top edge.
Use your fingers to gently lift up the top edge of the motherboard.
Insert the point of a spudger under the top right corner of the earpiece module and gently pry up.
Remove the earpiece module.
