OnePlus 5 Earpiece Speaker Replacement

This repair replaces a faulty earpiece speaker on OnePlus 5 devices, which involves removing the motherboard. Note that the most challenging aspect of this process is releasing the frame clips.

  • The provided guide images may show additional components (battery and rear-facing camera module) already removed; they do not need to be taken out for this procedure.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert a SIM card eject tool, bit, or straightened paperclip into the small hole below the SIM card tray, located near the rear cameras on the edge of the phone.

  • Press firmly to eject the SIM card tray.
  • During reassembly, properly orient the SIM card tray before inserting it.

Step 2 | Back Cover

Step 2 image

Remove the two T2 screws, measuring 2.6 mm each, positioned beside the USB-C port at the phone's bottom edge.

  • Identify and separate the screws from each other.
  • Apply gentle pressure to remove the first screw, then repeat for the second.

Step 3

High risk of display panel damage if procedure is not followed correctly.

  • Read through the four-step process before attempting to pry the rear case from the plastic frame.
  • Identify the two seams between the body and screen:
    • Display panel seam: Part of display assembly; do not pry here or damage will occur.
    • Frame seam: Only pry at this point where frame meets back cover.
  • Awareness of twelve clips holding the frame to rear case is crucial during removal process.

Step 4

Avoid powering on the phone during disassembly.

  • Place a suction cup near the display's bottom edge.
  • Pull the suction cup firmly to secure it in place.
  • Insert an opening tool into the seam near the suction cup, pressing until it wedges between the frame and the back cover.

Note: This step may require significant force due to tight tolerances; a new opening tool with a sharp edge will aid in this process.

Step 5

Slide the opening tool along the bottom edge of the phone.

  • Guide the tool around the left corner, keeping its edge within the seam.

Continue sliding the opening tool along the long edge, releasing clips as you go.

Be patient with the top-left clip near the front-facing camera — it's recessed and might be tricky to release; use the flat end of a spudger or opening pick for assistance.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Wiggle the frame gently to release the top and right edge clips.

  • The frame remains connected to the back cover via a flex cable.
  • Do not remove the back cover yet.
  • Pause here to test your phone's functionality before reassembling the back cover.

Ensure the top edge clips are secure in place before proceeding.

  • Align the top edge of the frame with the back cover and ensure the top clips fit into position.
  • Squeeze along the long edges to snap the remaining clips securely into place.

Remove the 2.6 mm Phillips screw securing the cable bracket above the battery.

Pressing down on the middle of the connector may cause permanent damage.

  • Pry up the back cover flex cable using a spudger's point.
  • To re-attach:
    • Align and press one side until it clicks into place.
    • Repeat on the other side, avoiding the middle of the connector.
