Nothing Phone (1) Screen Replacement

Replace only the screen in this guide; do not attempt to replace the frame or motherboard.

  • Pre-check: Verify you have a replacement screen without an attached new frame, as this requires a different procedure.
  • Battery precautions: If battery is swollen, take necessary safety measures. Discharge the battery below 25% to prevent thermal damage during repair.
  • Replace cracked or broken screen on your Nothing Phone (1).

If frame is deformed, replace it to ensure proper screen mounting and even pressure.

  • Tools needed: replacement adhesive for reattaching rear glass during reassembly.
  • Device functionality: After repair, device will function normally but may lose IP rating.

Step 1 | Heat the rear glass

Step 1 image

Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the rear glass for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.

  • iOpener or heat gun can also be used, but do not overheat phone (risk of display and internal battery damage).
  • Alternatively, use a hot plate with caution.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Step 2 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Secure a suction handle to the rear glass's bottom edge, as close as possible.

If the rear glass is cracked, the suction handle may not stick — try using strong tape or superglue to secure it in place and allow it to cure.

  • Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a small gap between the back cover and frame.
  • If you're having trouble creating a gap, apply more heat — but follow the iOpener instructions carefully to avoid overheating.

Insert an opening pick into the created gap, then slide it to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a second opening pick along the bottom edge of your phone.

  • Slide this new opening pick towards the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave both opening picks in place to stop the adhesive from resealing itself.

Step 4 | Slice the adhesive

Step 4 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert only the tip (iOpener) into a damaged area (~2-3 mm) to avoid damaging the LEDs.

If adhesive becomes hard to cut, it may have cooled down; reheat with iOpener for 1-2 minutes.

  • Insert a third opening pick into the bottom left corner of your phone.
  • Slide this opening pick along the left edge to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Thumbnail 2

Position the opening pick at the top left corner of the phone.

  • Slide the opening pick along the top edge to cut the adhesive.
  • Secure the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2
  • Insert a fifth opening pick underneath the top right corner.
  • Slide the opening pick along the right edge of the rear glass to slice the remaining adhesive.
  • The rear glass should now be separated from the frame. If there's still resistance, use an opening pick to separate any remaining adhesive.

Step 7 | Remove the rear glass

Step 7 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Remove the rear glass.

  • Clean relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and apply new adhesive where needed.
  • Use a dust blower for cleaning before installing a new rear glass due to its transparent nature.
  • Secure the new back cover using pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.

Apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes after installation to ensure proper bonding. A stack of heavy books can be used to assist with this process.

Step 8 | Remove the plastic cover

Step 8 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply heat from a iOpener for 1-2 minutes to loosen the adhesive holding the earpiece speaker.

  • (optional) Insert an opening pick underneath the grey plastic cover at the top edge of your phone.
  • Use the opening pick to pry up the plastic cover.
  • Plastic cover should now be removable.

Step 9 | Unfasten the earpiece speaker screws

Step 9 image

Remove the earpiece speaker using a Torx T5 screwdriver.

  • There are two screws, each measuring 4.2 mm in length.

Apply a suction handle to the top edge of the screen, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the screen is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Lift the screen with the suction handle to create a small gap between the screen and frame.

Do not attempt to move the opening pick to the top right corner of the screen as this will damage the plastic pin holding the display in place.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap between the midframe and screen, to the right side of the earpiece speaker cut-out.
  • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 50 | Slice the adhesive
