Nothing Phone (1) Battery Replacement

Replace a swollen or dead battery in your Nothing Phone (1) if necessary. To prevent fire risk during disassembly:

  • Discharge the battery to below 25%

Note: Your phone's IP rating may be affected.

Step 1 | Heat the rear glass

Step 1 image

Do not apply excessive heat that could damage the display or internal battery.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the rear glass for at least two minutes to loosen adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating the phone.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.

If the rear glass is cracked, the suction handle may not stick — use strong tape or superglue to secure it in place and allow it to cure.

  • Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a small gap between the back cover and the frame.
  • Apply more heat if needed, following the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive, then leave it in place to prevent resealing.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge of the phone.
  • Slide it to the bottom left corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Do not remove the opening picks, as this will cause the adhesive to reseal.

Step 4 | Slice the adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

For slicing near the glyph, insert only ~2-3 mm of the opening pick's tip.

  • If adhesive hardens, it may be too cold — use iOpener (1-2 min) to reheat before continuing.

  • Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.
  • Slide the opening pick along the left edge to cut adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Insert a fourth opening pick under the top left corner of the phone.

  • Slide it along the top edge to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 6

  • Insert a fifth opening pick under the top right corner.
  • Slide the pick along the right edge of the rear glass to cut remaining adhesive.
  • Continue until the rear glass is fully separated from the frame.

  • If there's still resistance, use an opening pick to remove any remaining adhesive.

Step 7 | Remove the rear glass

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the rear glass.

  • Clean the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) before applying new adhesive.
  • Use a dust blower to clean the transparent rear glass if necessary, especially before installing a new one.
  • Secure the new back cover using pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.

Apply strong, steady pressure to your phone for several minutes after installation to ensure a good bond. A stack of heavy books can help.

Step 8 | Remove the plastic cover

Step 8 image

  • Pry up the cover using the opening pick.
  • Remove the plastic cover.

Step 9 | Unfasten the earpiece speaker screws

Be extremely cautious when handling the bottom LED assembly — a fragile cable is exposed underneath.

  • Peel away small adhesive pieces holding the bottom LED assembly in place.
  • Insert an opening pick under the right, left, and bottom edges of the assembly to gently pry it loose from the daughterboard cover.

Never slide the opening pick further than indicated by the accompanying photos — damaging the cable is a real risk.

  • The central screw is concealed under a white protective sticker.
  • Ensure to remove all five screws before proceeding further.

Step 19 | Remove the plastic shield

Step 19 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Hold the daughterboard cover firmly with one hand.

  • Use a pair of tweezers to carefully pry up the grey plastic shield from the daughterboard cover.
  • The shield is held by mild adhesive, so gentle prying should be sufficient for removal.
  • Remove the grey plastic shield once it is free.

Step 20 | Fingerprint cable information

Step 20 image

Avoid applying excessive force when prying up the daughterboard cover as this can cause damage to the fingerprint cable.

  • Pry gently using a suitable tool.
  • Avoid pressing the tool too far underneath the cover.

Step 21 | Pry up the daughterboard cover

Step 21 image
