Nexus 5X Screen Assembly Replacement

Swollen batteries are extremely hazardous — always err on the side of caution and consult a professional if unsure.

  • Tape over the cracked display for better grip and protection from glass shards.
  • Discharge battery below 25% before disassembly to prevent any electrical issues.
  • Transfer all non-included parts from old frame to replacement part.

Be sure to secure replacement adhesive for reattaching components during reassembly.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert the SIM card ejection tool into the hole on the SIM card tray, located on the left edge of the phone.

  • Press firmly to eject the SIM card tray.

  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Rear Panel

Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot and twist it sideways to release the first plastic clip.

  • Slide the opening pick along the top edge of the phone to release the remaining plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick along all edges of the phone.

  • Release the clips securing the rear panel by navigating the pick around each side.

Release the two plastic clips adjacent to the fingerprint sensor by gently tugging on the rear panel.

  • Tilt the opening pick to slightly lift the rear panel.
  • Once released, carefully remove the rear panel.

Step 5 | Midframe

  • Remove the ten 3.6 mm Phillips screws securing the midframe.

Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot.

  • Twist the opening pick sideways to release the plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick along the top edge of the midframe to release the plastic clips.

The midframe can break easily at the long edge if the plastic clips aren't detached correctly.

  • Use a plastic pick to pry open the plastic clips on the bottom edge of the midframe.
  • Pry open the plastic clips on the long edge, ensuring they release completely for safe disassembly.

Ensure that all clips are released.

  • Remove the midframe with care.

Step 10 | Battery Disconnect

  • Use the edge of a spudger to carefully lift and release the battery flex cable, situated at the bottom right corner of the motherboard.

Step 11 | Battery

Apply iOpener to the back of the phone for at least 2 minutes.

Be careful not to burn yourself with excessive heat.

Be extremely careful not to damage the battery during removal.

  • Insert a spudger's flat end under the bottom left edge of the battery.
  • Pry gently upwards, avoiding excessive force or metal tools.

If stuck, apply isopropyl alcohol to each corner and let it penetrate for several minutes before trying again.

Locate the bottom right corner of the battery using a spudger.

  • Insert the flat end of the spudger under the corner.
  • Pry upwards gently to loosen the remaining adhesive.

Step 14

Remove the battery.

Do not reuse the battery after removal — risk of potential safety hazard.

  • Install a new battery in its place.

Before installing, clean the phone's glued areas with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

Ensure correct positioning: apply new adhesive to pre-marked locations within the phone, not directly on the battery.

  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape.
  • Press the new battery firmly into place for 5-10 seconds.

Step 15 | Motherboard Assembly

Apply the iOpener to the top edge of the phone, securing it in place for approximately 30 seconds.

  • The adhesive beneath the rear-facing camera should begin to loosen during this time.

Position the spudger's flat end on the left side of the rear-facing camera.

  • Apply gentle pressure to pry the camera up, ensuring the surrounding adhesive is fully released.

Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully pry up the display flex connector.

Avoid touching any wires or components — risk of damage.

  • Grip the lower part of the motherboard with your fingers and carefully lift it upwards.
  • Identify the small plastic clip next to the rear-facing camera that secures the motherboard in place.
  • Pull the motherboard towards the bottom edge, releasing it from the plastic clip.
  • Lift the motherboard out of the frame while avoiding the remaining camera connectors.

Step 19 | Screen Assembly

Locate the power button and its retaining small plastic elevations.

  • Use a pair of tweezers to carefully free the small rubber feet from their positions.
  • Lift the power button upwards, ensuring it is disengaged from the small plastic elevations.
  • Remove the power button completely.

Step 20

Use tweezers to free the rubber feet of the volume button.

  • Lift the volume button upwards.
  • Remove the volume button.

Check for damaged or worn-out parts, and replace as needed with spare components.

Use tweezers to carefully lift the earpiece speaker out of its gasket.

If stuck, use an iOpener to loosen the adhesive beneath.

  • Remove the earpiece speaker by gently prying it away from its mount.
  • Note the earpiece speaker's orientation for proper reinstallation.

Be cautious when handling the vibration motor — strong adhesive underneath.

  • Apply an iOpener to the top part of the screen for 30 seconds to loosen the adhesive.
  • Use a pair of tweezers to carefully pry up and remove the vibration motor.

Step 23

Insert the pointy end of a spudger into the opening of the headphone jack.

  • Pull up on the spudger to lever the headphone jack up and out of its gasket.
  • If stuck, apply a heated iOpener to the bottom front for 30 seconds to loosen adhesive.
  • Remove the headphone jack.

Remove the RGB LED notification indicator using a pair of tweezers.

  • Gently peel off the RGB LED notification indicator.

Step 25

Inspect the new component for transferable parts.

  • Identify and remove any additional components from the old part, such as screws or washers.
  • Set aside these components to be installed during reassembly.
