Nexus 5X Rear-Facing Camera Replacement

This guide is for replacing the rear-facing camera in the Nexus 5X.

  • Rear-facing camera removal requires a new adhesive for reassembly.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert SIM card ejection tool into the hole on the SIM card tray, located on the left edge of the phone.

  • Press in to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Rear Panel

Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot and twist it sideways.

  • Release the first plastic clip holding the rear panel in place.
  • Slide the opening pick around the top edge of the phone to release all remaining plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick around all sides of the phone, releasing all clips securing the rear panel.

  • Repeat this motion to ensure complete clip release.
  • Verify the rear panel can be removed easily once all clips are released.

Hold the opening pick at an angle and use it to slightly lift the rear panel.

  • The remaining plastic clips next to the fingerprint sensor need to be released by gently pulling on the rear panel.
  • Once free, remove the rear panel.

Step 5 | Midframe

Remove the 10 3.6 mm Phillips screws securing the midframe.

  • Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot.
  • Twist the opening pick sideways to release the plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick along the top edge of the midframe, releasing any remaining plastic clips.

Locate the plastic clips along the long edge and bottom edge of the midframe.

  • Use a plastic pick to carefully pry open these clips.
  • Confirm that the clips on the long edge have been released, as improper disconnection can cause damage to the midframe.

Ensure all clips are released.

  • Remove the midframe with care.

Step 10 | Battery Disconnect

Use the spudger edge to gently pry up and disconnect the battery flex cable at the bottom right of the motherboard.

Step 11 | Rear Facing Camera

Use a flat-edged spudger to gently lift the rear-facing camera's flex connector.

Step 12

Apply iOpener to top portion of phone for 30 seconds.

  • Lay iOpener across top of phone, targeting rear-facing camera area.
  • Allow iOpener to heat adhesive for 30 seconds before proceeding.

Step 13

Position the flat-end spudger on the left side of the rear-facing camera.

Slowly pry the camera out from its housing.

Step 14

Remove the rear-facing camera using a pair of tweezers.
