Nexus 5X Headphone Jack Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing the headphone jack on a Nexus 5X. Be sure to have replacement adhesive handy for reattaching parts during reassembly.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Insert the SIM card ejection tool into the hole on the SIM card tray, located on the left edge.

  • Press in to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Rear Panel

  • Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot and twist it clockwise to release the first clip.
  • Move the opening pick along the top edge of the phone to loosen the remaining plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick around the entire perimeter of the phone.

  • Release the clips securing the rear panel.
  • Continue until all clips are released.

Step 4

Release the two plastic clips adjacent to the fingerprint sensor by gently pulling the rear panel.

  • Tilt the opening pick to slightly lift the rear panel.
  • Continue to pull the rear panel away from its frame until it is completely removed.

Step 5 | Midframe

  • Remove ten 3.6 mm Phillips screws securing the midframe.

  • Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot.
  • Twist the opening pick sideways to release the plastic clips.

Step 7

Continue sliding the opening pick along the top edge of the midframe to release the plastic clips.

Step 8

Use a plastic pick to release the midframe clips on both edges.

  • Pry open the long edge clips first, then move to the bottom edge.
  • Failing to disconnect these clips properly can cause damage to the midframe.

Step 9

Ensure that all clips are released.

  • Remove the midframe with caution.

Step 10 | Battery Disconnect

Locate the battery flex cable on the motherboard's lower right corner.

Use the edge of a spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the battery flex cable.

Step 11 | Headphone Jack

Apply heat from an iOpener to the bottom front of the screen for 30 seconds.

  • The iOpener should loosen the adhesive beneath the headphone jack.

Insert the pointed end of a spudger into the headphone jack opening.

  • Tilt the headphone jack upwards using the spudger to dislodge it from its gasket.
  • Remove the headphone jack with a pair of tweezers.
