Nexus 5X Battery Replacement

Do not use heat on swollen batteries, as they pose a significant hazard.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before starting disassembly.
  • Wear protective eyewear and exercise caution when handling potentially swollen batteries.

Take your phone to a professional if you're unsure about proceeding with replacement or it's severely swollen. You'll need replacement adhesive for reassembly.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

  • Insert the SIM card ejection tool into the hole on the SIM card tray, located on the left edge.
  • Press in to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Rear Panel

Insert an opening pick into the SIM card tray slot and rotate it laterally to dislodge the initial clip.

  • Guide the opening pick along the top edge of the phone, releasing additional plastic clips that secure the rear panel.

Step 3

Slide the opening pick around all sides of the phone, releasing all clips securing the rear panel.

Step 4

Release the plastic clips next to the fingerprint sensor.

  • Tilt the opening pick to lift the rear panel slightly.
  • Gently pull the rear panel to release it from its clips.
  • Remove the rear panel.

Step 5 | Midframe

Remove the 10 x 3.6 mm Phillips screws securing the midframe.

Insert a opening pick into the SIM card tray slot and twist it sideways to release the plastic clips.

Slide the opening pick along the top edge of the midframe, prying loose any remaining plastic clips.

Careful: Midframe may break if clips are not released correctly.

  • Use a plastic pick to pry open the plastic clips on the long edge of the midframe.
  • Pry open the clips at the bottom edge as well.
  • Verify that all clips on the long edge are released, as improper disconnection may damage the midframe.

Remove any midframe clips.

  • Carefully lift off the midframe

Step 10 | Battery Disconnect

Use the edge of a spudger to gently pry up and disconnect the battery flex cable, located at the bottom right corner of the motherboard.

Step 11 | Battery

Apply the iOpener to the back of the device and heat for at least 2 minutes.

  • The iOpener should loosen the adhesive beneath the battery.

Never deform the battery — risk of fire or explosion.

  • Insert the flat end of a spudger under the bottom left corner of the battery and gently pry upwards.
  • Pry only along the edges, as adhesive is located beneath them; avoid center area.
  • If the battery resists removal, try soaking corners with isopropyl alcohol for several minutes to weaken the adhesive.

Use the flat end of a spudger to pry the bottom right corner of the battery loose.

  • Gently push up on the spudger to release any remaining adhesive.

Step 14

Remove the battery.

Never reuse a removed battery — risk of fire or electrical shock.

  • Dispose of the old battery and replace it with a new one.

Before installing a new battery, remove any remaining adhesive from the phone using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
  • To position it correctly, apply new adhesive to the areas where old adhesive was located, not directly onto the battery.
  • Press the new battery firmly into place for 5-10 seconds.
