How to clean a water damaged Nexus 5 Display

The Nexus screen got wet due to sweat while running, resulting in minor marks on day one. However, over time it worsened and now leaves marks even when unlocked.

Step 1 | Showing the damage

Begin with the front frame and LCD display.

Avoid applying excessive heat which can damage the surrounding components.

  • Warm the stuck area using a Heat Gun at low temperature setting.
  • Gently pry off the flex from the frame, working slowly to avoid further adhesion.

Step 3 | Heating the screen at 50°C.

Use a multimeter to measure the component's temperature.

  • Heat the edges of the affected area.

Handle the flex carefully to avoid damage.

  • If installing an LCD screen, place it on the frame and follow steps in reverse order.
  • Use a guitar pick to slowly separate the screen.

Step 5 | Removing the layers on the screen.

Use a hair dryer set to "cold air" to gently separate the layers.

  • The first layer can be removed.
  • The second layer remains attached to the screen frame.
  • The wet layers are adhered to the screen itself.

Use a guitar pick to carefully separate the layers.

  • Start with the 2nd layer.
  • Then, move on to the 3rd layer.

Step 7 | Dry and clean.

Do not separate the 3rd, 4th, or 5th layer.

  • Dry and clean all layers using an electrical contact cleaner.

Step 8 | Reassembling the layers.

Apply electronic contact cleaner to all layers, ensuring thorough removal of residue.

  • Dry the layers completely before proceeding.
  • Reassemble in reverse order, starting with the outermost layer.

Step 9 | Testing the assembly.

This repair may require patience and caution when handling delicate screen layers.

  • Begin by removing the outer casing to access the screen components.
  • Disconnect the display cable from the phone's logic board.
