LG V20 Motherboard Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing the motherboard in an LG V20 smartphone.

Step 1 | Battery

Do not disassemble with a charged lithium-ion battery, as it may catch fire and/or explode if punctured.

  • Discharge battery below 25% before proceeding.
  • Insert a spudger or your fingernail into the small recess on the lower edge of the battery.
  • Pry up and carefully remove the battery, taking care not to deform or puncture it.

Step 2 | Midframe Assembly

  • Remove sixteen 4mm Phillips #00 screws securing the back cover to the motherboard.

Check if top and bottom frame sections are loose by hand.

  • If stuck, insert flat-end spudger, apply pressure to corner, and create a small gap.

Insert the opening pick into the gap at the bottom of the phone.

  • Slowly slide the opening pick along the gap while maintaining a slight angle.
  • The frame section should pop out of its plastic clamps as you progress.

Remove the frame section.

  • Repeat this procedure with the other end of the phone.
  • Within the top frame section, remove the small silver grating covering the speaker to avoid losing it.

Remove the loudspeaker from the motherboard cover using an opening pick.

Be careful not to damage the motherboard cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the right corner at the bottom of the phone.
  • Pry up gently until the plastic clamp releases and the cover pops out.

  • Slide the opening pick along the mid-frame.
  • Flip the pick sideways to release the plastic clamps.

Remove the motherboard cover.

Step 10 | Front-Facing Camera

Disconnect the front camera flex cable using a spudger's flat end.

  • For motherboard assembly removal, you may skip next steps if desired.
  • Careful removal of the front facing camera with tweezers is recommended if uncertain.
  • (Optional) Remove the front facing camera with a pair of tweezers, gripping only the body to avoid damaging the sensor pcb.

Step 11 | Motherboard Assembly

Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the flex cable of the left rear camera.

The second rear camera will come loose with the motherboard since it's connected on the other side, handling both as a single unit.

  • Leave the front facing camera in place unless you feel uncertain, then use a pair of tweezers to carefully remove it before proceeding.

Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the display flex cable.

Use the pointed end of a spudger to gently pry the motherboard assembly upwards.

Avoid damaging the surrounding components during removal.

  • Lift up the motherboard assembly and remove it completely.

Step 14 | Primary Rear-Facing Camera

  • Flip the motherboard assembly over.
  • Use the flat end of a spudger to carefully disconnect the flex cable of the rear camera.
  • Be careful not to damage the flex cable or surrounding components.

  • Use tweezers to remove the rear camera.

Step 15 | Motherboard

Remove all other components from the device.

Do not leave the SIM card inside the phone, ensure it's safely stored elsewhere.
