LG Optimus G Charging Port and Microphone Flex Cable Replacement

Charging issues may indicate a faulty charging circuit.

  • Inspect the USB charging port as it's often responsible for USB detection problems.
  • Note: Replacing the port is relatively simple once the phone case is removed.

Step 1 | Charging Port, Microphone Flex Cable

The Optimus G may forget it's plugged in due to a faulty charging port assembly.

  • Replace the charging port assembly with a new one, available on eBay for $15-25.
  • For E973 models, use a specific E973 charging port, as other guides may be inaccurate due to its unique shape.
  • If your model is E971 or E970, modify the phone later using an alternate charging module.

Removing the back phone case can be challenging due to its flexible plastic.

  • Remove the SIM card and tray using a paperclip or SIM removal tool.
  • Ensure the SIM card is removed before attempting to remove the back panel.
  • Use a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the 2 screws located at the bottom of the phone.
  • The screws may be stubborn, and you might need to use pliers or a magnet to loosen them.

Be aware of what you're prying: between the black back and silver strip.

  • Use a guitar pick (slightly skinnier than regular) to apply pressure along the edge, starting around the corner where separation is weakest.
  • Once slightly separated, switch to a more robust tool like a spudger for further prying.
  • To release clips, gently pull plastic phone AWAY from frame instead of pulling DOWN.

Move on to the bottom of the phone near the charging port.

  • Release the 2 clips holding the back cover in place, applying consistent pressure if necessary.
  • Once only the top is remaining, gently wiggle the back cover towards the top and release any still-attached clips.

Do not lose the volume rocker or power button, as they may fall out during removal.

Remove the logic board protector and the speaker assembly.

  • Take off the 9 screws as shown.
  • Pry out the plastic piece slowly; there's strong adhesive underneath (indicated by a rectangle) that can bend or snap if not careful.
  • Remove the 2 black screws holding the speaker assembly in place, then gently wiggle it loose.
  • Disconnect the 2 antenna connector cords: one is grey and the other is black.

Removing parts may cause permanent damage to your device.

  • Remove the push connector from the motherboard and ensure the grey antenna connector has been taken off.
  • The charging port circuit board is secured with adhesive in two areas, but removal should be straightforward as the entire part is being replaced.

Incompatible phone models may require case modifications to fit the new flex cable.

  • Before installing the new cable, inspect its compatibility with your device's model and adjust your case if necessary.
  • Trim excess plastic around USB connector slots on the logic board using a utility knife to ensure proper alignment.

Take care when modifying screw holes in your phone case to accommodate the logic board.

  • Maintain accurate positioning of the port by ensuring it's pushed far enough down, avoiding obstruction of screw holes.

Step 7

Sensor lights may be dim due to misaligned charging port LEDs.

  • Plug in all cords (push connector, 2 antenna cables) and phone into charger.
  • If LED lights up red or screen turns on briefly, it's a good sign everything is installed correctly.

Sensors for back, home, and menu functions may not light as brightly if charging port LEDs don't perfectly align with phone sensors.
