LG G8 ThinQ Screen Replacement

This guide helps replace the screen of your LG G8 ThinQ, which may also restore access to certain functions and displays affected by a damaged screen. Note that complete screen replacement requires disassembling the entire interior of the device.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before proceeding.
  • To facilitate disassembly, use iFixit's adhesive remover or high concentration (90% or higher) isopropyl alcohol to loosen strong adhesives holding the battery and back panel in place.
  • Optional: Replace the adhesive for a closer factory finish.

Step 1 | SIM Card Tray

Unplug and power off your phone.

  • Insert the SIM card eject tool into the pinhole in the lower right side of the phone.
  • Remove the SIM card and tray.

Step 2 | Back Panel

  • Position the phone with the screen facing down.
  • Insert opening cards between the back panel and frame to loosen clips and adhesive.
  • Use equal pressure when prying away the back panel from the phone, as excessive force can cause damage.

  • Once space is created, use an opening tool to fully separate the back panel from the phone.

Step 3 | Midframe

Remove all 14 screws from the midframe with a Phillips #000 screwdriver.

  • Insert an opening tool into the midframe's perimeter and work your way around to pry it loose.
  • Once free, carefully lift the midframe off the phone.

Step 4 | Speaker System

Use an opening tool to gently pry out the speaker system.

Step 5 | Front Cameras

Disconnect the ribbon cable from each camera using a opening tool.

Remove both cameras using an opening tool.

Step 7 | Headphone Jack

Disconnect the ribbon cable connecting the 3.5mm audio jack to the motherboard using an opening tool.

Be careful not to damage the ribbon cable.

  • Remove the screw holding the 3.5mm audio jack in place with a Phillips #000 screwdriver.
  • Take out the audio jack from the phone.

Step 8 | Battery

Flip the phone so that the screen is facing up.

  • Apply heat using a heating pad, hairdryer, or heat gun to loosen the adhesive beneath the battery.
  • Avoid overheating the phone, as it can damage the screen and battery.

It may take multiple attempts to soften the adhesive completely.

Step 9

Use an opening tool to gently lift the ribbon cable, which will disconnect the battery.

Risk of damage to internal components if battery is not removed carefully.

  • Use an opening card or tool to pry around the edges of the battery.
  • If stuck, reapply heat or apply isopropyl alcohol under the battery for several minutes.

Pry the battery out of the phone.

Step 11 | Motherboard

  • Disconnect the two coaxial cables from the motherboard using an opening tool.

Disconnect the screen ribbon cable from the motherboard using a opening tool.

  • Pry up the motherboard from the with an opening tool.
  • Remove the motherboard from the phone.

Step 13 | Vibration Motor

Use an opening tool to remove the vibration motor from the phone casing.

  • If necessary, apply heat to the vibration motor's opposite side using a suitable heat source to loosen any remaining adhesive.

Step 14 | Screen

Remove the charging daughter board using a plastic spudger.

  • Reattach all previously removed components to the new phone casing
  • Replace the original screen onto the phone.
